Thirty years since, when Dr Smith flmt oom monced practice here, it was thought by medica £ men that to be a specialist was derogatory to the professional man, bnt this, like most other innova* tions in scientific and lay matters, was found ro the* to aid than to be " infra dig " to that profession, wherein the speciality was practised. LallG— ana and Ricord, in France, and Aoton, in England, were for years cried down by thoir niedioa brethren. Now and for many past years thoy have* been looked up to, and quoted, by every man whopretends to have any knowledge of the partioular branch of the profession which these gentlemen specially devoted themselves to. It was the samowith Erasmus Wilson, the "Skin Dootor," cently knighted by Her Majeßty. Years since, it was the same with DrL. L. Smith, of Melbourne, who practised (as did Lallemana and Ricord) as a specialist, in all oasos of diseaaee and habits whioh produce symptoms of Nervoi—Affectionß, of Skin Eruptions, of Prostration, and make human beings invirile, or which unfit them to carry on the purposes ot their being, or whioh demonstrates itself, on the other hand, in Eruptive* Diseases and Secondary Forms of Affections. Is all of these cases how necessaiy it is to have the Specialist who has devoted hia whole lifetime to the studying and practising in this ono branoh of his profession P Hence, now, after so many years, all minutio) are familiar to him, and symptoms whioh (it is not unreasonable to suppose) may not strike the General Practitioner at once, bow from con* stant practice and observation make Dr L, L r Smith master of the subject. The medical profession (that is, tho more liberal minded of them) have likewise recognised this faot. and Specialists now in every branch— oculists, aurißts, syphilic, mental diseases, chest diseases, and in fact every portion of the human frame, has now some member of the profession who devotes his time to that, and to none other. For instance, the " chest doctor" would on no account attend an acconohement, and the oculist would not think of setting a brsken leg; but each would advise hia patient to go to that doctor who is most famed for treating the disease requiring special skill. Dr L. L. Smith askß those whe require troatuient for Weakness, Prostration, Barrenness, and Ste. rility, whose frames and whose constitutions are shattered, to consult him as an export—thirty (30) years' practice in this Colony, with a practice extending throughout not only the Colouieß, but in India, China, Fiji, and even in England, ho claims' ought to bo sufficient to cause every man or woman requiring such skill as is alluded to above, to con. suit him eithor personally or by letter. As a syphilographer no othor medical man hag been able to have such largo experience as he pog» Beßses, and for othor allied affections, Bnoh as nervous disease, no one in the profession has en joyed bo much publio confidence. DR L. L. SMITH. Consulation Feb dt Letter, £1. Medicines appropriately packed and orwarded over the civilised globe, DR L. LTsMITH, 182, Collins street east, hliiißOUßKi, 95
