♦ The ordinary meeting of this body was held on Tuesday evening; present—His "Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Kidd, Anderson, Wilson, Blakely, Stanton, Hansen, and Woodford. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read — Prom Mrs Anderson and W. Alexander, ' offering to pay half cost of asphalting in front of their premises. Prom the Treasury, Wellington, advising payment of .£9 5s fines into Borough account. Prom Pire Brigade, re medals, and asking patronage of the Council at an entertainment. Granted. Prom the Bridge Engineer, re appointment of Clerk of Works. Deferred for discussion in Committee. surveyor's report. This report, which was of considerable length, referred to the general works of the town. The Surveyor intimated that in order to proceed with some necessary work the purchase of a new theodolite was requisite. A new instrument was ordered to be obtained. It was decided to notify the owners of land in High street to fill in holes on the section and abate nuisances which existed thereon. It was also resolved to request the late Clerk to complete the pegging of the new cemetery within ten days. The report waa adopted. PETITIONS. A petition was received from owners of land in Otalri street, re formation and shingling of the road. The Surveyor was instructed to get out estimates of the work. _Jso> from property owners in Charles street, re encroachment of the river. On the motion of Councillor Wilson, a sum of -310 was voted on condition a like —mount was subscribed by the petitioners, in order to carry out the work desired. FINANCE. The receipts for the past fortnight were reported to be .£47 Is ; tho credit balance at Bank, £329 14s 6d ; and accounts were passed for payment amounting to £97 16s sd. CLERK OP WORKS. _ The Council went into Committee to consider this appointment, and upon resuming, the Chairman reported that Mr Caius 'Clarke was recommended. Upon moving the adoption of the report, Councillor Kidd and Councillor Wilson objected. The appointment was confirmed. ORDINARY BUSINESS. It was decided to procure gum boots for the Fire Brigade. Councillor Wilson called attention to the occupancy of the Keserves at Ashburton, and stated that one of the lessees had filed. A Committee, consisting of the Mayor and Councillor Stanton, were appointed to visit Ashburton, and report at an early date. In answer to a question, re the shingling •f Holland's road, it was decided to hold tho matter over for a fortnightThe Clerk was instructed to ascertain whether the continuation of Ohqka road East was within the boundary " of the Borough. Councillor Wilson drew attention to the small-pox scare, and asked if the Board of Health would prepare to isolate any infected perßOtiß if the malady appeared. The Mayor undertook to confer with the Health Officer upon the matter and report. NEW BRIDGE. A long and desultory uiscussion took J dace upon the dilatory mr. .mer in Avhich he b*uilding of the bridge xvu* being carried jon. The Mayor explained the matter, which, subsequently, was allowed to drop.

NOTICE OF MOTION. Councillor Wilson moved his notice of motion from last meeting, re leasing of the Council Reserve on Raven street, which was seconded by Councillor Stanton and carried. Councillor Wilson gave notice he would move, at next meeting of the Council — " That the North road from Ohoka road to the Swing Bridge bo named High street." The Council then adjourned.
