« Letters of Naturalisation hare been issued to August Cordelin, mariner, of Lyttelton, and Valentine Esselborn, tailor, of Christchurch. The whole of the members of the Linwood Town Board will retire from office, by efflvixion of time, at the beginning of next month. The elections for a new Board will take place on Sept. 17. At the monthly meeting of the West Melton School Committee, held yesterday, Mr Thomas H. Anson, of Courtenay, was nominated to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Education Board caused by the resignation of Mr Inglis. Sergeant Brooks, formerly stationed at Christchurch and Sydenham, has been appointed Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court at Akaroa, and Clerk to the Okain's Bay, Wainui, and Little River Licensing' Committees. Miss Georgie Smithson was most unfortunate in the weather last night, as but for the steady downpour of rain she must have played to a crowded house at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton. Those who did attend her performance certainly enr joyed it well, and should the rain hold off to-night, many will avail themselves ofthe* opportunity of witnessing her spirited performance. A brick building of considerable size is being erected in Martin street, a lane between Colombo and Manchester street south, for the purposes of a sawmill for Mr Simmons. It is of one storey, and iB 75ft in length by 33ft wide. The chimney^ which is completed, is 60ft in height. The machinery will be driven by a 12 h.p. engine, to which steam is to be supplied by a Cornish boiler. Both engine and boiler were procured from the establishment of Messrs J. Anderson and Sobs. The work of erecting tho building is being carried out by Mr T. J. Glodhill. The fame of the productions of the Kaiapoi Woollen Molls is, it is well known, tolerably widely diffused throughout New Zealand, e*d even in the neighbouring Colonies* Moßt persons will be surprised, however, to learn that it has "penetrated to the " Old Country," and that the Company are actually about to execute an older for the Home market. Yet such is the oase, for an order has been received from a Glasgow firm for a quantity i of blankets, which, will be shippod to Sootland early next month. The blankets to question are to be of ft very high quality
1 .- superior in fact to anything generally produ.ed by Home makers. According to a Gazette notice, the Post ■ Office at " Governor's Bay " is henceforth - to-be designated " Teddington." The Eev Ealph Brown's second phrenological lecture will be given in the Durham street Wesleyan Schoolroom this evening at 7.30.^ The rev gentleman advertises that he is issuing character delineations at the Oddfellows' Hall. At the Lyttelton Naval Brigade's annual meeting held hist night, reference was made to the late Mr Wilson, of the "Six Hundred." A member of the Oorps having known the deceased for over 20 years, testified to the unassuming and noble . character of \he gallant soldier, and amidst silence proposed a vote of condolence to ■ the widow, that a subscription list be drawn up by the members, and that J35 be at once Bent to the family out of the funds of the Corps.
