THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT.

AN UNLOOKED-FOR BEQUEST. ENROLLING VOTERS. [Special to the "Stab."] DUNEDIN, June 23. The Times this morning in a leader, adversely criticises the Financial Statement, which it characterises as a melancholy record of disappointed expectations, not so much on account of the actual figures it reveals, as because the idea that the finance of the country was in a carefully organised condition, proves to be the veriest of chimeras, and the feeling created by it that the safeguards supposed to protect the public finance are rubbishy pretences. Mr Jurgens, blacksmith, of Tinkers, who was found dead in his bed some time ago, has bequeathed the whole of his property to the Eureka Lodge of Good Templars for the Sick and Accident Fund. The property is estimated at .£SOO. Great interest is felt here regarding the forthcoming elections, and political parties ire already active. A house to house visitation is being made to induce persons to register, and the canvassers so employed^ are not touting for individuals or party, but are simply taking steps to get everyone enrolled.
