Canterbury College.
* MEETING OF GEADUATES. A meeting of the graduates of Canterbury College was held in the College Hall at noon to-day, for the purpose of electing a member of the Board of Governors in the place of the late Mr H. J. Tancred. Twenty graduates, including three ladies, \ were present. Mr F. de C. Malet and Mr I Stedman, Eegistrar of the College, were also present. The proceedings were opened by Mr F I de C. Malet, who said that under Section 18 of the Canterbury College Ordinance the Board of Governors had issued a circular to all the graduates requesting them to meet for the purpose of electing a Governor in the room of Mr Tancred. He said that he had to apologise for the absence of Mr Montgomery, who was detained in Wellington by his Parliamentary duties. He congratulated the graduates on having met on the present occasion, and could assure them that if the Board of Governors could give any assistance towards carrying out the object of the meeting, they would be glad to do bo. The circular having been read, Messrs Malet and Stedman left the meeting. On the motion of Mr Watson, seconded by Mr C. Chilton, Mr T. S. Foster was voted to the chair. Mr Chilton raised a question as to what constituted the qualification which entitled persons to vote as graduates. The difficulty was the interpretation of clause 18 of the Ordinance, which provides that whenever there shall be not fewer than 30 members of the College who are graduates of the University continuing on the books of the College, vacancies in th» Board of Governors shall be filled up by the majority of the graduates present at a meeting convened for the purpose by the Board of Governors. It appeared that there were certain graduates who had passed under the teachers' regulations, whose names were on the list of graduates, but who had not previously been members of the College, and it was necessary to decide whether these were entitled to vote. After a brief discussion, it was decided to ask Mr Malet's opinion on the point. That gentleman stated that the Board of Governors had not arrived at any formal opinion on the matter, and after further discussion the following 1 resolution, was agreed to unanimously : — "That this meeting be adjourned to noon on Saturday, June 28, and that the Chairman and Mr Cohen be requested to obtain legal opinion as to the construction of clause 18, and as to any other point that may arise." The Chairman^ thanked Mr Malet, on : behalf of the graduates, fw his attendance and counsel, and the meeting adjourned.
