SUICIDE.

INSOLVENCY CASE. FLOUR MILL BURNED. DUNEDIN, June 9. A man named Frederick Nicholls committed suicide in Castle street «,his evening by taking laudanum. He had been drinking heavily, and was brought home drunk during the day. He called his wife into the bedroom, and, bidding her good-bye, I* drank the laudanum, which she thought was wine. He afterwards came out into the kitchen and smoked his pipe, dying I nearly two hours afterwards. I The man killed at Upper Taieri on May

29, was Jeremiah Dickson. The dray overturned, and Dickson was suffocated by a bale of rabbit skins falling on him. A public examination of a number of bankrupts was held before Judge Williams to-day. His Honor, contrary to the practice of Judge Johnston, allowed the Assignee to appear without counsel. The statement of assets and liabilities in the insolvent estate of W. and G. Turnbull and Co. was filed in the Official Assignee's office to-day. The total liabilities are .£63,723, the unsecured debts being £30,203, and secured .£33,520. The securities are valued at .£38,764, and the total assets at £51,372, the deficiency being .£12,351. Mr Allan Mann's flour and oatmeal vaill at Woodside, Outrain, in Taieri County, together with a large quantity of grain, was destroyed by fire on Saturday evening; only the water-wheel of the mill was saved. The building was valued at .£ISOO, and was not insured. It is calculated that about .£650 worth of grain was burned. Mr Dackens has an insurance for .£3OO on the grain, and estimates his loss at .£3 50 over that amount. The mill was the property of Mr Mann, and was leased by Mr Dackens at an annual rental of .£l3O, and with a purchasing clause for .£ISOO. On Friday and Saturday the kiln was rather heavily fired, and it is presumed that as the fire started in it, the woodwork must have ignited. An insurance policy for .£IOOO existed on the mill till about six weeks ago, when it lapsed.
