The Theatre Royal was attended last evening by between 150 and 200 people, mostly in the pit. Mr Hyland was very successful with his horses. A particularly lively mare, which began by striking out before and behind in the most vicious fashion, and would nob at first allow him to approach her, eventually was subdued completely, and Mr Hyland won loud applause by standing on her back, rolling her about in all sorts of positions, and finally mounting her bareback and, without even the assistance of a halter, riding her round the stalls. The programme included the usual tricks with the ponies, &c. Mr Hyland appears again tomight. The monthly sitting of the Ashburton District Court has boon adjourned till Thursday next. The Lyttolton Na~al Artillery paraded last evening for inspection, 53 of all ranks being present, under Captain M'Lcllan. In the absence of the officer commanding the district, the District Adjutant (Captain Newall) acted as inspecting officer. The battery having being exercised b; Lieutenant Dransfield, Captain Newall expressed himself as very j pleased at the large muster, only six men | being absent. Mr J. F. Stanley, photographer, has just succeeded in making an excellent photograph of the new drop scene at the Working Men's Club. The exposure lasted fifteen minutes, and the re3ult is one which must give the greatest satisfaction to all concerned, proving, as it does, the artistic powers of Mr Briggs, who painted the scene, and the perfect acquaintance Mr Stanley has with the details of his profession. The length of the exposure was, of course, due to the small light that could be obtained for an interior, and at this season of the year. Mr Stanley has . taken an equally good photograph of one of the scenes lately painted for the Working Men's Club Theatre. The Ashburton Volunteers held a ■ Church parade on Sunday last, when 30 men of all ranks attended, exclusive of the band. The men assembled in front of the Post-office, and all the officers were present, Captain Douglas being in command. Headed by the band, the corps marched to the Wes- j leyan Church, where very considerate arrangements had been made for the soldiers' reception. Mr G. W. Leadley, one of the local preachers, occupied the pulpit, and delivered one of those wellreasoned sermons for which he is justly celebrated in the district. In the march to and from chapel, the band played several tunes arranged from. Sankey's book, and suiting admirably as marches. On the stand they also played sacred music. The monthly inspection of the Christchurch City Guards and Garrison Band took place at the Drill-shed last evening. There was a good muster, the Guards numbering 37 of all ranks and the band 24. Owing to the absence of Lieutenant-Colonel Lean and Captain and Adjutant Newall from Christchureb, Captain Wolfe, as senior captain, acted as inspecting officer, the command of the company being taken by Lieutenant Garnett. After the inspection, the company was put through a number of movements ! by the non-commissioned officers, and then j went for a march through the town headed by the band. At the weekly parade on j Monday next, Dr Brittin, the honorary I surgeon of the corp3, will give instruction j in ambulance drill to those members who ; may wish to receive it. Parker. Messrs J. Aulsubrook . and W. H. Porter have been elected life ' members. ] Tee Handkerchief which is perfumed with ! Murray and Lanman's Florida. Water .yields more : enjoyment to its possessor than would a bemquet of flowers, because the latter fade, dtcay, and -. become offensive, but the Floxida Woter remains j fresh and delicious, unaffected by the lapse of i time. i
