It ia also considered probable that in such case the great Powers will require England to guarantee the safety of foreigners in Egypt. It is > estimated that there are 15,000 Egyptian troops available for a defence force 5 but Sir Evelyn Baring, who •was recently appointed British diplomatic Agent and Consul-General in Egypt, considers this to be insufficient. , The treaty whioh hiis been arranged between Germany, Austria and Italy for •mutual protection and assistance in time of war, ia condemned by the' French Press 5 and the French Government are, it is said, preparing a protest on the subject. The Rev Sydney Linton, the newly apSinted Bishop of Riverina, has deferred 1 departure from England until the autumn. ' Her Majesty ia making the neceasary preparations for the publication of a further volume of her "Journal in the Highlands." The London Press is almost unanimously opposed to France interfering in any way with Egyptian affairs at the present time. .It'is rumoured that Earl Dufferin, the 3ritiah Ambassador at Constantinople, ■who visited Egypt on a civil mission early in lost year, is again to return to Egypt. The name of the Rev Dr Croko, Arch--bißhop of Cashel, the Rev Dr Walsh, President of Maynooth College, and the Rev Mr .Morgan, have been submitted to the Pope, from which to select a successor to the late Archbishop Vaughan.
