Fatal Accident at Lyttelton.
■» A sad accid ant ooourred at Lyttelton yesterday at tbe oxoavatione being made by Mr J. Stinson in oonneotion with the new road to the site of tbo proposed ocean wharf. Two workmen were iajured— Benjamin Gregory losing his life, and H Ryder sustaining a fraoture of the leg. Both men were working with piokaxes at' the foot of a high bank, whioh is being cleared away in order to straighten the road. T. Newton, one of the mon employed on the contraot, noticing that the clayey soil was damp about where these men were working, had cautioned them to be oareful but a short time before the aooident occurred. Gregory's death was caused by a solid lump of earth, weighing quite a ton, striking him on the head and shoulders whilst he was in a stooping attitude, tho dibris at the same time breaking Ryder's leg. The body of the unfortunate man was taken to the morgue. (Dr Macdonald was quiokly on the eoene of the acoident, and attended to Byder. Greg- , ory is said to be a married man, with a family of threo ohildron residing iv Christ- j ohuroh.
