Annual Sports.
« A meeting of the Sefton Committee waa held on Monday. A lengthened programme was adopted, including a Hack and Hurdle Bace for all horses in the Kowai and Ashley Boad Distriots that have never started for public money. Mr Vaughan plaoed his paddook, which is admirably suited for the purpose, at the disposal of the Committee. The date of the meeting was fixed for Jan. 10. Mr Vaughan informed the Committee that a bazaar and conoert would also be held in the Sefton Town Hall on tho same date in aid of the Sefton Episcopalian Church, to which all the ladies in the district are very liberally contributing, and whioh it is anticipated will be a grand succese, the one gathering very materially assisting the other. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Vaughan for his liberal offer to the Committee. A publio meeting was held at Mr A. M'Nae's Forsyth Arms Hotel, Little Biver, on Saturday evening, to take into consideration the holding of athletio sports at Little Biver during the Ohristmas. holidays. Ihe attendanoe was fair. Mr G. W. Joblin was voted to the ohair. It was unanimously resolved — " Ihat athletio sports be held at Little Biver on Boxing Day." A Committee was then appointed, with Mr A. M'Nae as Treasurer, and Mr T. Holt as Seoretary. Ihe sports will be carried out under the Caledonian Society's rules. A publio meeting to consider what steps should be taken for holding athletio sports in conjunction with a concort and ball, under the auspices of several members of the Ashburton Caledonian Society, was held on Monday evening, in Sutherland's Hotel, Southbridge. Mr Hayes ooeupied the ohair, and was supported by a large number of the townspeople and others. Mr Taylor stated that several gentlemen at the Ashburton had signified their desire to give a conoert in the Town Hall on Deo. 28, and the present meeting had been convened for the purpose, if possible, of entertaining them during the day by holding some sports. A telegram had been reoeived from Mr M'Bae, of Dunedin, intimating hia willingness to he present should any sports be held, and give his servioeß, together with hiß three sons, free of all expenses. Mr D. Sutherland stated that Mr William Graham had kindly offered them the use of hia paddook. It waa deoided to hold the sports on the above-mentioned date, and a Committee was appointed, with power to add to their number. Mr I. Wauohop was appointed Ohairman and Mr B. G. Paok, Seoretary. A subscription list was then handed round, and about £20 col* looted in the room. A vote of thanks to the Chairman oonoluded the meeting.
