DUNBDIN, Nov. 27. A number of gentlemen waited upon Mr W. N. Blair, of tho Public Works Department, this morning to ascertain whether the rumour tbat the " unemployed " who were engaged on the Hindoa ssotien of the Otago Oentral Bailway have been discharged was correot. The party inoluded Messrs B. Gillies, A. Bartleman and 3, Boberts, and ware introduoed by Mr V. Pyke, M.H.B. Mr Blair informed them that aooording to instructions reooived from the Government 100 men had bsen dismissed, and the rest wonld have to leave as time went on. During the day, therefore, a Requisition was presented to the Mayor aaking that a publio meeting should be held to oonsider the matter, and his Worship has oalled one fer Thursday evening next, at the Queen'a Theatre. By the outgoing mail, applications nnder the nominated system of immigration, were forwarded for 72 souls, equal to 61 statute adults. Their nationalities aro i —Bnglish, 6,» Iriah, 29 ; Sootoh, 87. Of the numbor, 14 ara Binglo men, and 17 single women. Mr T. Fergus, M.H.8., leaves for Hobart by the next ateamer, to eupervise the contraot of the railway line frem Mersey to Deloraine, a distance of 87i miles. Messrs Fergus and Henderßon were the successful tenderers for this work, and th« amount of their contraot is upwards of £100,009. Over 400 men will be employed on the works next month.
