James M'lror' was killed yesterday in the Brunner mine. Death was instantaneous, ooal from the roof crushing him. A shook of earthquake was felt in the morning about the time of the f&tali.v, apd the one may have partly 6*ustd the other. A meeting Ot the Com&iittee appointed by fhe ratepayers who objeot to the aotion taken by the Drainage Board inthe matter of the new rate, was held yesterday afternoon, when it wai resolved to take a legal opinion on the feasibility of opposing the rate. The concert announoed by Mr Wolf to take plaoe at the Lyttelton Oddfellows' Hall, has bsen postponsd to Dec. 6, in oonsequenoe of a concert for the benefit of the widow and -ohildren of tho lata James Young having heen arranged for to-morrow evening. Considerable attention was exoited to-day by a really fine display of native fish at the ■hop of Mr Catohpole, Oolombo street. The principal part of the display consisted of a large number of enormous hapukas or gropers, one of the largest fiah fonnd in New Zealand | watera. Beveral of theae monaten were esti* : mated at being 1001 b weight each, not bo im* probable when it is considered that these fish have been known to turn the scale at 1401 b. There are also several fine trumpeters and -other fish. In tbe Longbeach Boad District there are five wards, eaoh sending a member to the Bead Board. Becently tho seat of the No. 5 ward member beoame Taoant, because tbe worthy gentleman had heen absent once too often. A fresh eleotion was necessary, and the intention to take nominations for tho vacant seat was duly advertiaed in the local papers. Ihe day fixed upon was Nov. 26, and the Olerk to the Boad Board, who was to aot aa ReturningOffioer, rode ont to the Coldstream homestead, whioh, for the time being, was to be the loene of the eleotion. Of oourse he expeoted that some patriotio ratepayers would oome and look at him at least. But the energetic Olerk and Beturning-Officer is not the firat man in the world who has suffered a disappointment, and he only experienced a feeling common to humanity, when the time passed avay and not a soul came near him to nominate even one good man and true, as a number of the Longbeaoh Boad Board. Ihe rateable value of the ward is over £66,000, but the area that holds that amount of wealth does not appear to oontain enough pnblio spirit to save the Beturning-Officer a fifty miles' ride on a bootless errand. Ihe indifference of the ratepayers in the ward wih oost them the expense attending two elections, when one would have served. Only ' one solitary ratepayer rode np to within "ooi-ee" of the homestead; but he, 'poor beni|hted one, when spoken to, was found to be qaite ignorant of the fact tbat an eleotion j wm to be held. j
