The Scotch herring fishery i 9 now a great industry, and it may be hoped that before long proper harbour accommodation will be provided on the east coaßt of Scotland, the deplorable lack of which (there are only four suitable harbours on that coast) has recently caused a great waste of money and a terrible lobs of life. Tho value of the boats employed in the fiohery was estimated last year at £646,883, against £272,960 in 1862. Iho value of nets in 1862 was £407,237 ; last year it had risen to £711,039. The number of men and boys engaged was over 100,000 in 1882, '
