SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
» An ordinary meeting of the Bydonham I Borough Council was held at aaron o'olook last evening; presont — His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Andrew, Bherlook, Aehwortb, Brown, Forrester, Bowden. Apologies were made for the absence of Councillors Comber and Webber, and the Mayov mentioned that Councillor White, M.H.8., had not yet arrived from Wellington. COBEESPONDHNOB. The following was read :— From Messrs Harman and Bfcev<ts, stating that certain lots had erroneously appeared on tbe rate roll as belonging to the estate of the late Henry Bewail, and asking that an alteration might be made by the insertion of the names ot the present owners. It was decided that the request be complied with. From the Drainage Board, stating, in Answer to the Council, that they did not feel justified in deviating from their former propoeal re amount due to the Council for street repairs. The Mayor thought it would be the best to go to law at once. The Town Clerk Baid that the Counoil could legally claim £419. Councillor Andrew feared the Council would loie by going to law. The Mayor suggested that the matter might with advantage be postponed till next meeting, whan Councillor White would be present, and this was agreed to. From the same, (Btaticg that the Board oould not entertain the Counoil's propoßnl to empty the nightsoil into the sowore, and forwarding the Board's Engineer's report, showing the impracticability of the proposal. Beceived. From the Bailway Department, stating that the gao lamps over the Madras street ' railway footbridge would shortly bo oreoted,
and expecting that the Oounoil would arrange for lighting them. Several members remarked that this light* ing would bo a heavy item, and Councillor Andrew stated he believed it waa intonded to pat five lamps on the bridge, and Councillors did not see that Sydenham should pay for lighting the railway yard. The matter was referred to the Lightifig Committee. A petition from nine ratepayers of Darwin street requested that bette* drainage might be providod at the junotion of the street named with Wilion's road. Mr Robb attended and stated that culverts were required. The Clerk and Surveyor concurred, and the matter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. A petition was received from Mr B. Jones and 22 other ratepayers, asking that a meet* ing might ba oonvenod to hear the views of the candidates for municipal honours upon Bubjoots affeoting the welfare of Bydonham. The petition was presented by Mr John Lee, who explained that it would have b?en more numerously signed had he had more time to canvass for signatures. The Mayor feared thero would he somo difficulty in ob'aining a building in time. It was decided tbat the Mayor should convene a publio meeting for Wedn«eday evening next, at 8 o'clock, in the Oddfellows' Hall, Colombo road. r ihe Town Clerk was instruoted to invite the candidates to be present. EKPOET OV WOBKS COJIMITTBB. The following wa* read : — 1. Tour Committee beg to report that they havo given instruction* tor an eetimato to be made of tbe cost of forming and metalling Poison's lano, and recommend thst tho ratepayers in that lano be informed that the Council will do the work when the estimated cost has been paid to tho Council. 2. Tho Committeo rcoommend that tbe agreement with Mr Lansdown respecting the railway sidings be filled in, so as to provide that tho term of his lease shall coramenoo on Jan. 1 last ; that tho rent be payablo on Jan. lin each year; that tho olauee restricting the right of the Oounoil to removo tho sidings for public purposes be filled in, so that tho Oounoil may exercise that right after Jan. 1, 1836, and that the' Council then execute tho agreement. 8. The Drainago Board have not yet replied to the Council's letter of August 17 last, respecting tho flooding of the streets of the Borough during heavy rains ; and as a great de»l of damage was done by the floods on the sth and 6th inst, it is imperatively neoesaa-y that something should be done to afford relief. The Committee therefore recommend that the Botrd be again written to on tho subject. Councillor Andrew mentioned that ho had heard of several instances of the sowers being inadequate to carry off tho storm wator during the reoent rain. The report waa approvod. tfIHANOH. The Finance Committee reported that £290 4) 8d had been received during the past fortnight. The payment of accounts amounting to £269 13s 6d was reoominondod. The debit balance at the Bonk whs £214 3« 41. Tho Committee recommended that £35 bo paid to Mr Alfred Allen as compensation for land taken for Gordon streot. With respect to tho Cemetery Board's request for a contribution of £92 towards the maintenance of the publio cemetery at Now Brighton, the Committee considered that it vm not a fair method to charge on the basis of population irrespective of distance from the cemetery ; and as other local authorities had deolined to pay, they advised that this Council also decline. The report was adopted. Tho seal of tho Council was affixed to the lease of railway sidingo (Council to Langdown). Councillor Andrew asked for leave to postpone his resolution re reductions in tho Council's Btaff till next meeting. Leave was granted os requested. After dealing with various matters of minor importance, the Oounoil adjourned.
