CANTERBURY TEMPERANCE UNION.
A meeting of the Committee of this newlyformed Union was held yesterday afternoon, the President, Mr J. T. Smith, in the chair. The eleotion of Secretary was tho first busi- 1 ness transacted. Upon the motion of the Yen Arohdtacon Dudley, seconded by the Bey J. Crump, Mr W. Herbert Jones, the Seerotary of the late Conference, was appointed to the offioa. The seleotnn of ■ a treasurer, as moved by the Bey H. 0. M. Wataon, fell upon Mr B. Olepbane. The consideration of the formation of branches of the Union throughout the provincial district was then gone into, and after a number of minor matters in oonneotion with their constitution, &0., were disposed of, the following resolutions, among others, were agreed to : — "That each branoh shall have the privilego of sending 000 representative to the Union, and where a branoh has more than fifty members, it may send one representative for erery additional fifty or fraction thereof." " That branches shall be requested to draft up their own constitution and by-laws, forming their basis upon the general principles of the Union." " That the Seoretary communioate with all the Conference representatives, forwarding the resolutions of tho Conference, together with the principles of the Union and the resolutions of this Committee, and furnishing them with suoh other information as may be deemed necessary ; also, requesting them to take steps to form branches forthwith." A discussion took place with regard to the amendment of the Licensing Aot, and the -formation of a Band of Hope Union, but definite aotion was deferred to the next meeting. The Mcv S. Slocombe reported that a meeting for the purposo of forming a branch of the Ternperanoe Union in the Heatkcote district was arranged for this evening in St Peter's Ohuroh, Ferry road. The Committee adjourned to Monday, Sept. 24.
