At Port Chalmers, where the licensed housea are all closed at ten instead of midnight as formerly, the arrests fer drunkenness have been 18 during July and August, compared with 87 during the same period of tho previous year. At tho monthly meeting of the Ministers Confersnoe, upon the motion of Dr Stuart, it was resolved— " That the members of the Oonferenoa strongly recommend that the elder ohildren in the Industrial Sohool and the Benevolent Institution be allowed to i attend servioe in tho neighbouring ohurohes lon the Sundays." A deputation waa apI pointed to present the resolution to the I authorities. It was also resolved that an ' appeal bo mado to the pablio for subscrip-
tions to meet the expenses in oonneotion with the Bible classeß in the publio aohools oonduoted under the auspioes of the Conference. The Dunodin Oentral Licensing Oommittee refused to extend lioenses till 11 o'olook, and re- granted a lioense to the railway refreshment rooms. At the Police Oourt Edward Tibbetts was find £4 10s and costs for smuggling jeweller}.
