Christchurch Rifles Ball.
The ball given by the Ohristohurch Rifla Volunteers, in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield street, last night, passed off most successfully. The walls were appropriately decorated with swords and fire-arms, arranged in stars along the walls and interspersed with flags. The stage was oonverted into a drawing-room, and above it, facing the hall, were the colours of the battalion, surmounted by the letters 0.8.V., worked in crimson on a ground of tapestry. Upwards ofjlSO couples were present,- amongst the officers being Colonel Lean, Captain Adjutant Newall, Captain Boott, of the College Bifles ; Captain Strange, of the Artillery; Captain Joyce, of the fydenham B : nesj Captain Ferguison, of the Christchurch Ri&etj Lieutenant Drantfield, of the Lyttelton Navals; and Lieutenant Franois, of the City Guards. His Worship the Mayor and the Lady Mayoress were also present. The ball was commenced by his Worship the Mayor leading .off Mrs Fergusson, and Captain Fergussen the Lady Mayoress. The musio was supplied by Mr Sohwartz's band, a sufficient guarantee for its excellence. To Mr Messenger was entrusted the catering, and it need hardly be said that he provided a capital 'spread. Card rooms and smoking rooms were not wanting for those who wished to avail themselves of suoh luxuries, and upon the whole the Ohriitchuroh Bifles may be congratulated upon the success of the first ball they have given since the formation of their oompany.
