HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Ohristohuroh Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday afternoon ; piesent — The Mayor of Ohristohuroh (in the ohair), Dr Print, Mesin 0. T. Ick, J. GK Hawkes, the Mayor of Sydenham, the Hon E. 0. J. Stevens, and the Major of Lyttelton. The Ohairman stated that Mr Maroh had written to cay that he would not be able to be present at the meeting, owing to his being detained in Wellington on business connooted with immigration matters. HOSPITAL OOKMITTBE'S BEPOET. Tho Hospital Committee reported that during the fortnight ending July 14, 28 patients were admitted into the Hospital, and 19 discharged, leaving 77 patients in fcheInstitution. During the same period there was one death. The number of patients in the Hospital for the corresponding period of last year was 63. AKABOA HOSPITAL, It was reported that there were three patients in the Akaroa Hospital. IYTrBLTON OBPHAKAGB. A report was read from the Aoting-Seore-tary on the recent fatal aooident at the Lyttelton Orphanage, whereby a little girl, named Day, lost her life through falling into afire. Iho Mayor of Sjdenbam read a report on the subjeot from the master of tho Inßtitu< tion, who stated that no blame was to be attached to any of the officials for the ooourrence, and spoke in high terms of the oonduot of a prisoner named Olegg, who was working in the building at the lime, and who snatohed the child out of the fire and extinguished her burning clothes, getting severely burned in so doing. The master further stated tbat he had given the sum of £1 to the gaoler to be handed to Clegg on his release Mr Joyoe said that the Sergeant of Police at Lyttelton had confirmed the correctness of the letter. He moved— "That this Board records its appreciation of the aot of bravery performed by the prisoner Olefg in saving from immediate doath the little girl, who has since died, and bb the prisoner received severe injuries from the child's burning clothes, and had acted promptly and without waiting for tho pormisßion from the warder in charge in going to the rescue of the girl, resolve that tho matter be brought under Iho favourable sotico of the Minister of Justice." Tho Mayor of Lyttelton seconded the motion, which was Curried. The maßter of the Orphanage was authorised to have the guards in front of the fire places allured, so as to prevent tho possibility of similar aooidonts in future.
