Death of Tom Thumb.
The Canal Quarrel. LONDON, July 17. The death is announced of General Tom Thumb (Oharles Warren). The Sultan claims the right to be consulted in connection with the construction of the second Oanal. Baron de Lesseps states that if England declines to proceed with the oonstruotion he will carry out the work himself. Henry M. Stanley, the explorer, haa concluded an alliance with the natives in the Oongo country, and has succeeded in checkmating M. de Brazza, the French explorer, who is also on an expedition in that country. A general strike among the telegraph operators in America iB impending, and serious inconvenience is feared. The French troops have looted and destroyed by fire the native quarter at Tamatave. News from the Oape confirms the previous information of the surrender of Mapooh, the leader of the Natives on the western frontier of the Trans* vaal. The Assembly at Oapa Oolony has rejected the Basutoland Disarming Bill.
