THE ELECTRIC LIGHT AT LYTTELTON.

The firstpubliotrial of tbe Lyttelton Harbour Board's syßtem of electric lighting took place on Baturday night. Tho dynamo was set in motion shortly after 7 p.m., and burned without interruption till about b quarter pari, nine. Considering that it wes but the occond time that the lumps wero tested, general sa'.iefiiction was expressed, f- everal of the lamps, notably that at the seaward end of tho flock, wero a trifle out of order, and will require to be taken down and rc*ad justed, which will occupy sevoral days. The wholo plant was twice transhipped boforo rcoching Lyttelton, and it is a wonder that the delicate mechanism of tho lamps stood the nocoeeari'y rough handling so well. The dynamo was only worked on Saturday night at about 18.000-candle power out of a possible 34,000 ; thus it will be seen thero is a largo margin of power in reserve, which will be availablo whpn the first stiffness has worked off the maohines. Mr Prince, the agent of the New Zealand Electric Lighting Oompany, to whom we are indebted for inforwalion, dosires to express his obligations to Mr Turpin, engineer of the Harbour Board'B dredge, and to Mr Derbidgo, for services rendered to him during tho work of erecting Ihe plant. Difficulty was caused again on Saturday by tho stretching of the driving band of the engine, which in consequence had to ba shortened several times. Tho lamps, it will be remembered, are 16 in number, of 2000-candle, and are by the Brush Company, Limited. The engine is a high-pressure one of about 14 h. p. nominal, andisby Messrs Scott Bro:., of Christchuroh. In honour of tho occasion, tho thips in harbour sent up a fice display of fireworks and the Lyttelton Brass Band on tbe steamers' wharf, by the light of the now lamps, gwe some capital selections of music.
