" • Singer Manufactumn(j Co.— For tho Best Family Sewing Muchino, including variety of work, i excellence of workman <hip nnd material, simplicity of construction and durability, a First Order of Merit, with Certificate of Gold Medal. " Davis Sbwiho Machine Co.— For their Family Sewing Machine, for its variety of work, excellence ' of workmanship and material, a Silver Medal and First Order of Merit. In arriving at tho merits of ' this machine as compared with the ono exhibited by the Singer Company, tho jury have had considerable difficulty in arriving at their decision, and it will be satisfactory to the public to know that the awards have beeu given in tho abovo order after long discussion by a majority of two to one. OTHER EXHIBITS EXAMINED. Tho Committeo have also examined the following machines :— The Household, the Bradbury, the Howe, and the Wheeler and Wilson, but beyond possessing some novel tiO3 in construction, they have no special poiuts to entitle them to leading places in this report. Dbab Sir.— l am directed by the Committee of Judging and Awards to aotaowledgo your letter of the 16th inst., and to inform you that wheu the Davis' Sowing Machine Company's protest was investigated by the Committee, it was decided to refer the matter back to the Jnror3 of Section VII., asking whether they would kindiy reconsider their deoision and inform them (tho Committee) at an early opportunity whether thoir decision given —of n First Order of Merit, Silver Medal— could be altered to a recommendation of certificate of Gold Medal, the reply wis that, after due consideration, they could sco no reason for altering the award. This decision was final, and ao' opted by the Committee, Messrs Fiske and Co. being advised of tho result, consequently the advertisement you refer to is NOT OFFICIAL.
