4 [By Tbihgbaph.] [jbom oxtb own cobbbßpondbnt.] WELLINGTON, Deo. 4. Afc the Besident Magistrate's Court this morning, R. W. Bedo sued J. L. Hall, tho well-kuown comedian, to recover the sura of £4, being Half a week's salary as an aotor at £1 6s 8d per night;. The evidence of the plaintiff was to the effect that he had been engaged to play for a month at a Balary of £8 weekly. At the expiration of that period he continued to give hia services, although he had not been requested to do to, and played for three nights at Wanganui. When the oompany returned to Wellington tho defondant met him in tho theatre and informed him that the company had beon broken up. Witness was quite ready then to go on with the piece, and there bad not been any desire on his part to break the engagement, for the defence Mr Hall stated that last Monday morning he attended at the theatre at 11 o'clock.and wbb quite surprised to find that none of the company had turned up. He waited about for a long time in order to see whether any of the members would put in an appearance, but none of them attended, and, in consequence, the performance announced for that evening did not come off. He never told anyone that the company had broken up. The plaintiff: Your Worship, is there no way of prosecuting this man for perjury ? He has been telling deliberate falsehoods. Witnesß : Well, you era a nice young man, certainly. The plaintiff : I don't wish to ask you any more questions. The evidence of B. W. Marshall, H. Lazelle, and W. Wykes having been taken, his Worship gare judgment for the amount claimed, with costs.
