She is now in the dock. On Sunday last she had 8000 visitors. The crowd was so excessive that the marines had to fix bayonets to keep baok the rush. Government have come to an amioable arrangement with the Insurance Companies regarding the fire at the Printing Office, and accepted £12,000. The amount originally claimed was £18,000. A sad affair occurred near Bright, in the North-eastern district. Two young men named Badcliffe and Fitzgerald quarrelled over a foot race, and agreed to fight. Badcliffe struck Fitzgerald in the chest after fighting for some time, and killed him. Both families were well known in the djetriot. A man named John Brentian, a recent arrival from California, drowned himself in the Yarra. A couple of days before he had been robbed of £100, and it is thought this preyed on his mind. The trial of William Hill for the Beedy Creek Bank robbery has been postponed till the December sessions at Melbourne. Miss Olivier, proprietress of Garton's Hotel, has been summoned by the. police for allowing the use of a room for Miller's sweep business. On Sunday last, a boy found a bottle on th« coast near Geelocg, containing, a paper with these words, "Loch Garry sunk off Otway Nov. 2 ; all hands loßt. Captain on ship till last moment. John Erskine, Captain. Finder report to Geelong." A ship of that name left Geelong for London on Wednesday, but it is almost certain that this is a hoax. The racehorse Darebin has been bought by Mr Cox, cf New South Wales for £670.
