DRAINAGE BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the. Ohriitchurch District Drainage Board was held yesterday afternoon; present— Mr L. Harp»r (Chairman), Menrs Vincent, Ashwortb, Parker, Manning, Dunbar, Hubbard, and Dr Doyle. MBW DBAIKAGB Mllr. The Chairman said that the new Bill, together with a petition in its favour, signed by more than 1000 ratepayers, would be sent to Wellington immediately, and that Mr Thomson would take charge of it, and do all in his power to support it. On the motion of Mr Parker, seconded by Mr Manning, a resolution in accordance with the above was carried. bnginbhb's bbiobt. The Engineer's report was read and dealt with clause by clause. It treated for the most part of matters of executive detail ; involving reference to plans, and long discussions of a conversational character. Mr Parker asked the Engineer if ha had seen a letter in one of the papers referring to the traps between the sewers and houses, in which the writer affirmed that the traps hold four gallons at least ; did the Engineer think the remarks true? The Engineer said that the traps were smaller than those approved of by Mr Clark, lhey, of course, required emptying pretty frequently. Siphon traps prevented the escape of bad gas, but allowed everything to go through. He had a trap of the usual construction on his own premises, and found it satisfactory. COBBBSPONDENOB. The following was read :— A letter from the Belwyn County Council called attention to the unsound state of a culvert across the Bicoarton road near the Hospital. The matter was referred back to the Counoil, the Board declining to take any responsibility. A letter from the Spreydon Boad Board objected to a drain being taken along the Lincoln road instead of through the ABylum grounds. A letter from Messrs Harman and Stevens on the same subject, stated that a claim for compensation would be made if a drain were cut through Mr Lyttolton's land now under lease to Mr Torranco. The consideration of the matter was deferred. A letter from the Co-operative Freehold Land Association called attention to the state of a drain running through rural section 593 known as Locksley. This was referred to the Inspector. A letter from Mr E. W. Turton asked to be allowed to occupy the land gained by the filling up of a drain at the back of his section, 121. The request was declined. A letter from Mr V. G. P. Leach informed the Board that his buggy had been upset on the Saturday befere last, through his horse shying at some empty cement casks covered over with old sacks on the South Belt, near the gasworks ; and asking for a cheque to cover, amount of damage done, £15. The letter was referred to the contractor for an explanation. A letter from Mr B. Dempßey called attention to the bad itato of the drainage in Aikman's road. ■ The letter was referred to the St Albans Borough Council. A letter from Messrs Garrick and Cowlishaw, re Mr Parsons' claim, was read. It was considered satisfactory. A letter from Mr W. Moor called attention to the drain on Mr Mann's property. It was referred to the Engineer. A letter from Mr Attwood informed the Board that the ; occupiers of put of section 1146 arc willing to put the Board in possession; and withdrew his application for a line of pipes to be put in at the back of his Beetion. The matter wbb referred to the Engineer to report upon. WORKS COMMITTEE'S BBPOBT. The following was read :— " 1. With regard to the matter referred to the Committee of the advisability jof filling up the creek in London street, Bingsland, and turning the water into the new Bewer, they would recommend that this be I done, and that the private drains at present connected with the creek be connected by the Beard with the sewer; the cost to be deducted out of ths amount appropriated for the drainage of Bingsland. 2. The Committee think it would be an unnecessary expense to l^y a line of pipeß in Montreal street from Hnzeldean road to the South Belt, as, requested by the Sydenbam Borough Council. 3. Withjrespeot to the csmplaint by the Sydenham Borough Council of the defective drainage lot the neighbourhood of Battersea street, the Committee are still of opinion that the works recommended by the Engineer in his rejport of Sept. 5, 1881, for the relief of this place should be carried out. 4. With reference to the state of Jackson's creek between Casmel street and the Drain j road complained on by Messrs Dearsly and others, the Committee recommend that notice be served on several of the owners of property adjoining to remove all obstructions placed by them in the creek 1; when this is done, the creek should be deepened from the outlet. 5, The Committee have cot come to any decision relative to the drainage of Linwood, but would advise that the engineer be requested to lay his plans, already prepared, providing for this, on the table. 6. The Committee recommend that the! Biccarton and Avon boundary drain complained of by Messrs Munroe and Stewart as not being sufficient to carry the drainage, be widened from the Biver Styx to where 1 previously done. 7. The Committee hare accepted the tender of James Bbalrey for widening Toon's drain from Church road to Dudley Creek." The report was considered clause by clause. Clauses 1 to 4, inclusive, were adopted. On clause 5 the Engineer's report upon the drainage of Linwood was read. Mr Dunbar aoked tho! Board to defer action until a reply upon the had been received from the Heathcpte Boad Board, who have it under consideration. Clauses 6 and 7 were] adopted, as was the report aa a whole. ACCOCHTS. Accounts to the amount of £2682 16s 5d on loan account, and £146 8s 5d on rate account, were passed for payment. TCAM BTHEKT BBWBB. i Mr Vincent moved — " That the Engineer be instructed to prepare plans and advertise for tenders for the Tuam street sewer, from the East town bolt to. Colombo street.".,

Mr Manning seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The meeting dosed at 4.45 p.m.
