LONDON, July 3
The preparations which have been proceeding at the War Office and the Admiralty for the despatch of troops and vessels to Egypt, are now completed. Work at the arsenal and dookyards has been pushed forward with all possible speed, and an extensive force, including a siege train of 72 guns is now ready to depart for Egypt without delay, if required.
ALEXANDRIA, Jtjly 3.
It has transpired that' Arabi Pasha, as Minister of War, has made a proposal to the Council of Ministers that a levy en masse should forthwith be made for the purpose of incraasing the defensive force of Egypt. The work of fortifying this city is now being actively proceeded with by the Egyptian authorities.
BRISBANE, July 4.
The Queensland revenue for the last quarter amounted to £612,000, being an increase of £41,000, as compared with the June quarter of 1881. The revenue for the year ended June 30, amounted to £2,100,000, an increase of £331,000 as compared with the previous year. The following increases are shown by the returns: — Customs, £119,000; land revenue, £12,000; rents, £44,000 ; railways, £83,000; and telegraphs £25,000.
MELBOURNE, Joly 4. A committee has been formed for the purpose of organising a banquet to Sir Henry Parkea on his return from England. Henry Bryant, alias De Beaumont, the Age informant regarding the Russian designs on the Colonies, has been sentenced at the Kilmore Police Court to five years' imprisonment for forgery. The Marchioness of Normanby is at present Buffering from indisposition.
WELLINGTON, Jtjlt 4. The Ittlian residents here are forming a Garibaldi Club on the model of tho Working Men's Club. A society for the promotion of ,the Fine Arts is also in course of formation! Tho residence of Mr BoardmaH, the Manager of the South British Insurance Company, wbb found on fire yesterday, the curtains in ono of the bedrooms having caught. Through the timely discovery, and having wator and a boso handy, only a trifling amount of damage was done. The following telegram has been received by the Secretary of Customs :— " The Government schooner JCekeno, which tailed some time ago to the Islands lying to the southward of New Z&aland to search for oastaways, and ako for the purpose of proteoting the seal fisheries, has returned to Stewart's Island. Captain Greig reports no important news."
NELSON, Juit 4. The football match between the Wellington College team and the Town Club was won by the latter, Seymour obtaining a tjoal just before time was called. The ground was very wet.
DUNEDIN, Jolt 4. It transpires that Captain Kitchener's furniture was insured in the South British for £150. The ship Timaru, Captain Fullarton, has arrived, with 140 immigrants all well. The World Company opened last nightto a orowdod house in all parts.
