The Star. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1882.
Within the last fortnight two outrages of an unusually shocking character have been ooaimitted, the one in Ohrutchuroh, the other in Kaiapoi. Two beings, presumably men, have successfully perpetrated one of the most horrid of all crimes, at the expense of two unfortunate children, whose age and sex might have been expected to have secured them immunity from any but wild beasts. With the guilt or innocence of the two individuals now under arrest, charged with the above offences, wo have here nothing to do. The truth or groundlessneßß of the suspicion! against them will be established in due course in the proper plaoe. We are not now endeavouring to prejudice the minds of those who read these remarks, either for or against the prisoners. The fact that two children have been outraged by someone or other, is unhappily indisputable. To that fact these remarks are confined.
