From a ratnra isaned by the Board of Trade, it appears that rin o the pasainif of the Merchant aaupping Act 430 vessels have been detained as unsafe or unfit for sea. Oat of thia number there were found unsafe 45 iron steamships, five iron sailing ships, and 362 woGden sailing ships. There ware also reported 170 oases of overloading or improper loading cf vessels. This does sot inolude ahip3 beicg detained for sot baing provided with proper lights fcti-i fog signals, or for not being properly marked. For the month of September there baa been a marked increase of 24,400 tons in tho clearances of Teasels with, cargoes for the ocean trade from the Fort of London; and the number of ships em. ployed S-.OWB si increase of 65 compared with tie corresponding month of 18E0. The increase in the number of British steamers emplojed kaa beea 137, in British Eailors 9, in foreign Bailors. 15, and in foieign steamers 7. The largest increase in the tonnage has been in that ouxied hy British steamers, tb.9 figures being 10.866. The total tonnage carried was 338,036 tons. For the nine months of the present year the number of ships employed has been less than the number for tho corresponding nine months of 1880 ; while, strange to say, tha total tonnage taken out of port has been 27,874 tons more than the corresponding period, tbe figures being as follows :— 4703 reesels with a tonnage of 2,719.163, against 4711 vessels with a tonnage of 2,691,239.
