Bradlaugh in the House of Commons. His Application to take the Oath Refused.
LONDON, Feb. 8. In the House of Commons last evening, Mr Bradlaugh appeared, and was advancing towards the table, when Sir Stafford Northcote rose and moved that he should not be allowed to take the oath. Sir Vernon Harcourt thereupon moved the previous question, and spoke at Borne length, advising the House to allow Mr Bradlaugh to take the oath, subject to a final decision of the question in the Law Courts. Mr Bradlaugh then (speaking from the bar of the House) solemnly declared that the oath would be binding upon him. A lengthy debate ensued, and finally "the previous question" was rejected by a majority of 58j in a full house. Sir Vernon Harcourt's motion was supported by Mr Gladstone and other members of the Government, and after the rejectioj of the previous question, Sir Stafford Northcote's motion refusing Mr Bradlaugh permission to take the oath was adopted. Mr Bradlaugh then withdrew from the Chamber, and subsequently lodged a protest against the decision come to.
SYDNEY, Feb. 9. Arrived, last evening, Wakatipn, s.s.. from Wellington. The trial of Messrs Bakers and Waddel, for conspiracy to defraud the shareholders of the Milburn Creek Copper Mining Company, commences next week.
AUCKLAND, Fbb. 9. The men employed at the Union Sash and Door Mill at Aratapu have passed a resolution •ympathising with, the men on strike. The Lunatio Asylum has been lighted by the gasoline process.
WELLINGTON, Fib. 9. Hooker's stables at Carterton, near the Public Hall, were burnt down about 2 o'olock this morning. A high wind was blowing, but fortunately in such a direction as to carry the flames away from the adjsoent buildings. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, the steward of the ship Euterpe, which arrived from London yesterday, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for broaching cargo.
DUNEDIN, Fbb. 9. Smith, a sottler at Tuapeka West, has been committed for trial on a charge of stabbing. In company with a fellow-settler, he was proceeding home from a meeting. Tho men quarrelled, and during a struggle Smith stabbed tho other with a pocket knife in the neok and thigh.
The National Mortgago Company havo declared a dividend of fivo per cent, for the half-year.
