State of Ireland. j Opening of Parliament. I The Europa's Cargo. i [Reuter's Teioegkams.] LONDON, Dec. IS. It is announced that Sir George Br am well, who resigned the position of Lord Justice of Appeal in September last, has been raised to the peerage. Tho Marquis of Hartingdon made a speech to-day at Burley, in Lancashire, in the course of which he stated that although the Leaguers were continuing a guerilla warfare in Ireland, there were hopeful signs that the agitation in the country was gradually diminishing. Among the chief of these was the fact of the increasing tendency whioh has of lato been shown on the part of juries to convict for agrarian offences. It is announced that her Majesty the Queen will attend in person at the opening of Parliament in February next. ALEXANDRIA, Dec. 18. The steamship • Europa, from Australia for London, with a cargo of frozen meat, has passed through the canal. B>r cargo is reported to be in perfect condition. LONDON, Dbc. 16. Consols remain at 99£. The market rate of discount has been raised t* s| ; the Bank rate remains at 5 per j cent. New Zealand securities are firat at last quotations. I The market for Colonial breadstufb is quiet but steady. Adelaide wheat, ex store, 565 ; New Zealand ditto, 52*; Adelaide flour, ex store, 41s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,809,000 quarters. Australian tallow is firm at 39b €i for best beef, and 44s 66. for best mutton. MELBOURNE, Dec. 19. The cricket match between the English team and Eleven of Victoria was j resumed to-day. The weather was again showery, and the wicket was very dead. Play was frequently interrupted during the day, and when the stumps were drawn the Englishmen, who had continued their second innings, had put together 162 for the lose of Beyea wickets. Barlow was caught for 42, Selby caught for 32, Shrewsby, not out, 62. The dispute betweon Professors Elkington and Nan son, in regard to the fracas which recently occurred ot the University Board meeting, has now been amicably settled, and the threatened action has been abandoned. SYDNEY, Deo. 19. A Btorm of unusual violence, accompanied by heavy rair, with thunder and lightning, was experienced here to-day. No damage, however, has been done to buildings in the city. A destructive fire hns occurred at Newcastle. The losses are covered bj insurance in the various Australian offices.
