» OHRISTCHUROH. Satubday, Dbcbmbbb 3. (Before G. L. Mellish Esq., R.M.) Lunacy from dbink. — A man named Thomas Wilson was carried into the Court by a Constable, in a stato of utter helplessness, and charged with lunacy from drink. Constable Johnßton Baid that the man had been brought to tho Addington police station aboat 10 a.m. on the previous morning in a oarrier's cart. The Constablo had taken chargo of him and brought him to Christchurch in a trap ; whilo on the way ho had very violent fits of passion, and had to be held down in the trap. Ho had beon on tho Lincoln road, and entered the garden of a Mr Ironsides and began smashing up the plants and bushes with a stick. Enquiries had bc.n made at the Black Horso Hotel and other place., but nothing could be ascertained about the man eithor as to where- he had obtained drink or whore he came from. The man had not spoken sinco his arrest, V.ut had written on a pioce of paper that ho was tonguo-tied. Dr Symes had seen him yesterday and had stated that ho believed that tho man was sufl'sring from tho effects of drink. His Worslup remanded accused for seven days for medical treatment. Drunkenness. -John Nixon was charged with being drunk in Colombo Btroet cn the provious day. Accuaed * said a neighbour of his had cut his throat recently, and this circumstance had sueh an effect upon him that he really could not help getting drunk, but he promised to join tho Templars if he had another chanco given him. His Worship said that tho accusod had made a similar promiso kst July, and had broken thc pledge neit. However, ho would not send the accused to gaol this timo, but would givo him a last chanco to reform. A fine of £2, or in dofault four days' imprisonment wub inflicted.
