LONDON, August 16, Mails.
The Homeward Australian mails, which left Melbourne on July 5, were delivered, via Brindisi, to-day.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following telegram :• —
LONDON, August 16. Markets.
Wool — The market is unchanged. Up to date 369,000 bales have arrived. Wheat — Market irregular. The French crop is deficient. Stocks are light, and there exists a speculative demand for Colonial wheat. Contingent thereon, New Zealand fair average quality is worth, c.i.f. off coast, 50s per 4801 b; ex warehouse, it is worth 51s per 4961 b. Tallow — Market quiet and stocks are heavy. Mutton is worth 365, and beef 34s per cwt.
MELBOUENE, August 18. Oats are quoted to-day at 3s 6d per bushel.
A Slanderer Complains.
Mr David Gaunson, late member for Ararat, has issued a writ against the Federal Australian. The damages are laid at £5000.
SYDNEY, August 18. Sailed — Arawata, s.s., for New Zealand.
BRISBANE. August 18. The Tabernacle Deserted.
The Right Rev J. Qnin, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Brisbane, died at half-past one this morning.
