BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KAIAPOI. rwociHSl The fortnightly meeting of this Council was hold in the Chambers on Tuesday evening ; present— The Mayor, Councillors Moore, Smith, May, Stanton, Mathews, Parnham, Woodford, Pinching, and Fraser. CORRESPONDENCE. The following was read : — From Mr J Butt, asking leave to erect a verandah and concrete the footpath in front of his new shops.-— From Messrs Garrickand Cowlishaw, lespecting the lease of the reserve.— From Mr C. 0. Bowen, in reference to the Bine and Cemetery Eeserve, particulars of which havo appeared in these columns. — From tho same, respecting the sittings of the Kendent Magistrate's Court, stating that the Minister for Justice had informed him it was not Mr Whitefoord's intention to reduce the number of sittings of that Court, and enclosing the answer from the Department relating thereto. From the same, referring to the resolutions passed at a conference of looal bodies on the question of public health, stating that the central Board of Health did not coincide with the stringent measures proposed, but forwarding a regulation made by that Board, which provided for a contingency such as a severe epidemic, and enclosing the regulation as sent to him by the Colonial Secretary.— From the Assistant-Engineer, stating that lie had recommended the improvement of tbe Kaiapoi railway station, suggested by the ( ouncil at its last meeting, to Mr lowe. The Mayor also read the Surveyor's report. MISCBI.LANBOUB. On the motion of Councillor Mar, seconded by Councillor Woodford, Mr Butt's application to erect a verandah was granted, subject to the work being done to the Surveyor's satisfaction. Messrs Dobson and Son's letter was ordered to be acknowledged. On the motion of Councillor Parnham, seconded by Councillor Woodford, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Isaac Wilson for the trouble he had taken in going to Wellington to urge the tramway construction. subvbyok's bbpoht. On the clause referring to re-forming Baven Quay, it was decided to form and shingle a footpath at a cost not exceeding £5. He reported having repaired the bad places in Otaii Btreet, and that the timbers for the repairs to the bridge had arrived in excellent condition, but that he presumed the' repairs would not be put in hand yet. He asked for extension of timo to bring up the report on the drainage. He also stated that between Saturday night and Monday morning some one had maliciously cut the : opo with which the swing o£ tho bridge was opened, and also had opened and left open the flood-gate at Beswick etivot, whereby the last high tide was allowed to enter, and the Parsonage grounds were flooded. MNANOIAL. Councillor Fraser, Chairman of the Finance Committee, reported that the receipts for the fortnight had been SA lis ; dog tax £1 6s. Tho credit balance at the Bank was £56 Os 9d. Accounts amounting to £27 19s were paid. DRAINAGE 00M1CITTBB. Councillor Smith desired to tender his resignation of the Chairmanship of tho Drainage Committee. The election of a successor was deferred till after the Surveyor's report had been received. PIANTIirO. Councillor Woodford, Chairman of the Planting Committee, reported that the trees in the Borough had now all been trimmed, and he asked for authority to sell the outtings, which would pay for the labour. The report was adopted, and the necessary authority given. PEBBY BBBBBVB. Councillor Moore asked if something could not be done with the Ferry Beserve, whioh, if let, would produce a very handsome rental, as it was in ono of tbe best positions in the town, and it was no use, nor was it produoing anything at present. The Mayor pointed out that it was vested in the Council for the purpose of erecting public buildings. Councillor Moore moved—" That the Town Olork be directed to writetothomemberforthe district asking him to have the purpose for which it was granted altered, so that use might be made of it."
Oounoillor Matthews seconded fche motion.
Councillor Woodford thought it would be found very conveniont for tho use of the tramway when that was constructed, and moved an amondmont to the effect that the question be deferred till after the construction of the tramway, which was not seconded.
The motion was agreed to. JIBE BBIGADK UNIFORMS.
The Mayor said thafc wifch regard to these uniforms fche members of fche IHgade had exoresßed the opinion that the clutli for their uniforms should be made at the factory, and he bad ascertained thafc the propor material could now bo got from there, and thafc the coßfc would be about 30s per man, which be* Md*"j the making up would make it a total of £70 for the 26 members. Some time ago the United Insurance Association had been written to, asking them what they wonld contribute towards this expense, but no reply had as yet been received. He thought the Association should bear a share of this ex*
pense. Councillor Smith said that the Association had not replied to the application for a share of tho new hose which was so much required, and which was estimated fco coafc £70 also. making altogether £140. It did not seem much good to write to them.
Councillor Fraser moved — " That a depute* tion wait upon the Association on both matters, to consist of the Mayor, Councillor Parnham and the mover."
Councillor Woodford seconded the motion.
The Mayor said that tho want of uniform! kept several of the Brigade away from the practices, as they were compelled to wear their own clothes.
The motion was carried and fche matter ordered fco stand over till the deputation re* ported the result.
The Council then adjourned.
