SOCIETIES.
The Dbuids.— The usual fortnightly meeting of the Perseverance Lodge wai held at their Lodge room, Sfc Mary's schoolroom, Addingfcon, on Tuesday evening. There was a fair attendance of members and' visitors. P.A. Bro Skinner reported on whafc had been done afc fche meeting iu reference to fche Centenary celebration. Some further business having been transacted, the Ljdge was closod in due form. — The Anchor Lodge met ac their Lodge room, Woolston, last evening. P.A. Bro Nathan reported on the proceedings of the Centenary Celebration Committee. It was decided to purchase a set of collars for the uae of the Lodge officers ; also to hold the meetings at the Oddfellows' Hall instead of in their present Lodge room. P.A. Bro Nathan reminded the brethren of the Centenary celebration, and urged them to muster in full force for the occasion. The Lodge waa then closed.
Mkeitalb Dbbatihg Sooihtt.— This Society met lasfc evening at the Merivale Schoolroom, the Bev. T. Flavell in the chair. The question for discussion was, " Which was the greater man of the two, Napoleon or Cromwell ? " Mr Griffiths opened the debate in favour of the former, and ably contended that the palm should be given to Napoleon. Mr Scanlan replied for Cromwell, and ad* du: ed many points in support of his argument. Messrs Ferguson and H. Meares followed in support of Napoleon, and Mr Howe against him. After a very animated discussion, the question was put and carried in favour of the former. The next debate will be, "Is the higher education of women prejudicial to their domestic qualities ? " Mr H. Meares opens in the affirmative, and Mr Ferguson in the negative. L.O.L. — A meoting of the Loyal Orango Lodge, Maiden City No. 1, was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom on Tuesday night, when the following officers were elected for tho ensuing term : — Bro T. Hay, W.M. ; J. Snosnell, DM. ; G. Johnaon, Secretary ; G. Faichmer, Treasurer ; W.J. M'Cullough, Chaplain ; M. Hoskins, Tyler ; G. Sopp, I.G. From the balance-sheet submitted at the meeting it appeared that the Lodge was financially in a most prosperous state, and the number of members botween forty and fifty*
