Pomob Coubt.— At the Police Courb this morning, before DrDeameraudF. E. Wright, Esq., Mary Aun Cook was fined 10a or 2A hours' imprisonment, for being drunk and disorderly. — Helen Anderson, for being drunk and disorderly at Addington, waß fined 40s or 96 hour*' imprisonment.— Frederick William Oldman, remanded from yesterday on a charge of vagrancy, was again brought up. Prisoner camo into Court staggering, and with a vacant, eemi-idiolio expression of oeuntenance. It appeared from the evidence that he had been living a vagrant life for a long time, being too laiy to work. Sergeant Morice stated that the prisoner had been examined by Dr Bymes, who thought that hs was not a fit subject for the lunatic asylum, that he was not suffering from any disease, but was a likely subject to " malinger " if he had a ohance. The Bench sentenced him to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. The Raiiavay Wobks. — The number of men employed on the construction of the various eeclions of the railway lines has been steadily decreasing of late, although at one of the sections, Albury, a considerable number of applications hare been made by men who ■wished to be taken on the workß. A few of these were found employment, but the greater number had to be refused. The re« turns for last Saturday giro the total number of men at work on the lines as 281, of whom 121 were at Weka Pass ; 96 at Waimakariri Gorge ; and 61 at Albury Do.tnj. Thh Spobtb 3hound. — The piece of ground in Hagley Park devoted to the purpose of the annual Popular Sports, is rapidly being prepared for the gathering on Anniveriay Day. The grass has born movrn, tho running-course cleaned and repaired, and the drain pipes leading from the neighbouring swamp, whioh are damaged in some places, are being attended and re-placed where required by nef ones. Haglbt Pabi.— The sand in the lower portion of Hagley Park, which for a long time has been spreading over the ground around has now covered an area of several hundred squoro yard*, aud reached to the approach to the College bridge. It eeems that nothing can bo done at present to check ila spread, and of courso the longer the nuisance is left, the more difficult it becomes to deal with. St. John's Chuhch — Tho fiov. C. M. Pym will continue the special services during this week. On Sunday tho church was crowded at both services, mid in the evening an after meeting wns held, to which many romaiued. Tho Bible-readings advertised for £o-day and Thursday will prove attractive to those interested in (he study of tho Scripture. Thh Waimaiabiei.— This river, owing to tho hot uor'-westors of tlia past few days, was in heavy flood yesterday, but no damage wa» done in the 'town, as Stewart's gully effectually relieved the river of a large quantity of water. Thb "Railway Tabif*.— At the meeting of tho Malvern Farmere 1 Club on Friday laßt, it was decided that seeing the present railway tariff acts injuriously on the trade of the district, tho Chairman bo impowored to comniunicate with tbo member for Coloridgo, calling his attention to tho subject, and urging the necessity of reformation in railway matters generally. Accidents. — When the Saturday morning train from Springfidd was about two and a-hslf miles from Dnrfiold station, . a young man named W. Curry toll off the train. It seems the carriage being full, ho had very foolishly gone to slcoo on tho platform, and accidentally fullen off. Ho was rendered insensible and was much cut about the faco but is gradually recovering from tho effeots' of tho shock.— On Saturday lust, whilo roturnng from Sheffield, an accident happened to Mr Leonard, of View Hill. ](, fO cnm ho was about to descend tho first cutting when tho horeo ho was riding fell, throwing him to tho ground. Cantbbbtjet Sttndat School "Union. — The usual monthly meutiug of the above wad held last Monday evening, in the Ten try of QSrinity Church. r ±'he President occupied the chair. Delegates from tho following schools were present: — Philipalowu, Ferry road, and Manchester street Congregational, Bingsland Free Methodist, bydenhaui and Oxford terrace Baptist, Montreal street and St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Durham street Wealeyan. The minutos of the laßt meeting were xead and confirmed. The Sub.Committee appointed to arrange for tho annuul gathering reported that they had selected hymns and appointod the following places of assembly :— St. Paul 1 3 Church, Colombo road Wesleyan Churches, Purham Btreafc and Bingsland. The following gentlemen hare baen asfcod to conduct! the services, viz. :*-Eov White, Sfc. Paul's $ Eev Dalketon, Durham Btreet; .fiev Elmslie, Colombo road; Jiev Slocomb, Bingeland. Meetings at Papimni and Woclston to be arranged for. It wa3 resolved — " That the thanks cf tho Union bo conveyed to Mr O. B. Brown for so ably representing tho Union at the Home Centenary." The Bccrotary wan requested to Bend a letter of condolence to Mra and Miss Greonaway. The President spoko _in high terms of the assistance he hod recoived from their departed brother. The following gentle* men were appointed a Committee to arrange for a service of song, viz. :— Messrs Cooke, Smart, and Scott. It was arranged ihe annual prayer ineolings be held on Sunday. Deo. 26, at East Belt Church, Y.&I.C.A. Booms, Colombo road Church, Woolston and St. Albana. It was decided to hold a special meeting of tho Union on Dec. 30. The meeting closed with prayer. The Domain. —-The park plantations on the south side of the river are at -present being thinned by having several of tho more common deciduous trees removed in order to relieve some of the specimens of Oregon Pines, Wellingbonias, Deodorua, and other trees, the progress of which was being somewhat hindered by tho rapid growth of the neighbouring tree's. A good deal of injury of a minor character was inflicted on tho trees and plants in the gardens by the recent nor'•weat winds. Several branches wore broken off, including a large limb o£ one of tho finest willows in the Domain. Tho smaller plants also suffered in various ways.
