LICENSING COURT.
The quarterly meeting of the licensing Court was held to-day, at noon. The following Commissioners were on the Bench : — Messrs H. J. Tancred (in tho chair), G. L. Lee, and JS. J. 8. Karman. NEW APPLICATIONS. Mr M'Connel applied, on behalf of Mr George Collier, for a certificate of a license to be issuod for a new hotel, which he proposes to erecb at the corner of JLower High street and the East belt. Mr George Harper appeared, to oppose the application. Mr 0. M. Gray alao opposed the application. Mr M'Connel objected that no notico of opposition had been given to Mr Collier as required by the Act; learned counsel addressed the Court at some leDgtb. in favour of the application. Mr Thomas appeared on behalf of Mr Thomas Graham for a similar certificate to issue for a new hotol, to be attached to Mr Hale' a house at the corner of Lower High street and the East Belt, opposite the site selected by M* Collier. Among the advantages to be secured by the proposed house, Mr Graham mentioned a waiting-room for the accommodation of intending passengers by the tramway. The Bench saw no necessity for a new house in the neighbourhood, and refused tho application. Mr Spackman addressed the Bench on behalf of Mr T. A. W. Parsous, who applied for a license for a house at the corner of Colombo and Middle streets. Mr Harper appeared on behalf of several residents in the neighbourhood, in opposition to tho application. In favor of the application the following gentlemen were called: Petor Ferguaon and T. A. W. Parsons.- On the other side were called Iho Boy Mr Cocks, Mr Packer, and Mr John Lee. Tho Bench again refused the application, at the same time paying a compliment to tho district for its exceptionally good character. Mr Thomas applied, on behalf of Mr J. C. 9mjth, for a license for the Half-way House at Courtenay. In roply to tho Bench : Superintendent Broham said that tho nearest police station was at Malvcrn. Tho Bench granted this application. Mr Joyce applied, on behalf of Mr H. Scrimshaw, for a licengo for a house to bo built at tho corner of Third and Harper streets, similar in character to Coker's Hotel. He produced a petition in favour of tho application, signed by 200, including the Mayor and several ir.ombers of the Council of Sydenham. Mr Harper appeared to oppose tho application and in support of a petition against it. The Bench at onca refused the application, as they could not see the necessity for an hotel in the locality. Mr Thomas, on behalf of Mr M. W. Edwards, applied for a wine and bier licence for the Cafo Francais in Hereford street. Superintendent Broham made no objection. The former license had been suffered to lapse through inadvertence. The Bench granted the application. TBAUBFERS. The following temporary transfers were confirmed : — William Henry Bennett to Joajph Morling, the Garrick ; Edward Cookson to Theodore Dorn, tho Commercial ; James Hirst to Samuel Freeman, tho Caledonian ; James Long to Frederick Bushford, the Valley, Heatlicote ; M. H. Craai to Edward Cook son, tho City.
