HOSPITAL ENQUIRY.

At s meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday afternoon the Major of Christchurch stated that he had been informed by Mr Harman that the Local Board of Health had abandoned the idea of employing counsel, and it was consequently decided that the Hospital Board should also dispense with legal assistance. At the same meeting, the following Commission, which had 'been received by Dr Skae in the afternoon, and of which a copy was forwarded to tho Hospital Board, was read — "Administrator of the Government to Frederick WiHiam Adolphus Skae, Esq., M.D. " Whereas it is alleged — " First — That one Mary Keetley was lately admitted into the Ohrwtchurch Hospital when Buffering from the disease known as typhoid fever, and lihat no 'report of such admission was made to the 'Local Board of Health for the City of Christchurch, and that the said Mary Eeotley subsequently died in the said Hoepital of <the-said disease : " Second — That io. the medical certificate of the death of the said Mary Keetley, the cause of death was stated to be gastro enteritis : "Third — That certain other .persons have lately been admitted into the said hospital suffering from typhoid fever .; that such persons, when po admitted, w-ere not entered in the books of the hospital -as suffering from the said disease ; and that no report was made to the Christehurob. Local Board of Health that the persons so admitted were suffering from the said disease : " And whereas it has been represented that it is expedient inquiry should be made as to the truth of such several allegations :: " "Now, therefore, I, James Prendergast, the : Administrator of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Colony, do hereby appoint you, Frederick William Adolphuß tkae, to be a Commissioner for the purpose of inquiring into and reporting upon the aforesaid allegations, :'.nd any other matters and things connected therewith which may be brought before you or coire under jour notice in the course of such inquiry.

" And I do hereby declare that this Commission <i<3 issued subject to the provision of the Commissioners Powers Act, 1867, and the Commissioners Powerß Act Amendment Act, 1872."
