BOARD OF HEALTH.

Tho local Board of Health met yesterday afternoon at half- past 2 o'clock ; present — Messrs B. J. 8. Harman (Chairman), C. R. Blakiston, 0. Cuff, F. Hobbs. W. White, jun., H. J. Tancred, and J. V. Boss.

A letter was read from tho Returning Officer of tho Heathcote district, stating that Mr O. Cuff had been elected a momber of tho Board for that district in tho room of Mr A. Duncan, resigned. THE HOSPITAL INQUIRY. The Chairman drew attention to tho fact that Mr H. Thomson had requested Dr Bkao's inquiry info the Hospital might bo postponed until after his (Mr Thomson's) return from Melbourne. Ho might mention thafc the Health Officer, Dr Nedwill, was in attendance, and would answer any questions wliich might be put to him on the subject. Rr Nedwill thought that thero had been too much delay already, and that an inquiry should have been held before. If further delay took placo he believed that thero would bo a difficulty in obtaining tho attendanoo of gome important witnesses.

The Secretary, in reply to a question, said that the inquiry was first suggested on August 16 last.

Dr Nedwill said that ho felt co strongly on tho matter, thafc he thought ifc would be well to suggest to tbe Government to abandon tho inquiry altogether rather than have any further delay.

Mr Hobbs thought ifc was desirable thafc tho inquiry be proceeded with afc once, and he would move absolution to the effect that the Government bo requested to hold tho inquiry at; once, as further delay might bo prejudicial to a fair inquiry. The motion was carried unanimously. DELEGATION OP POWEES.

Tho Chairman brought up the following report : — " Tho Committee appointed to consider fche question of delegation of powers under the ' Public Health Act, 1576, Amendment Act, 1880,' submit the following resolution for the Board's adoption : — ' That tho Chrißtchurch Drainage Board do hereby under and pursuant to the provisions of the Public Health Act, ISF6, Amendment Act, 1880, delegate to tho Mayor and Council of the City of Christchurch all tho powers conferred upon tho Chriatchurch Drainage Board aB tho Local Board of Health, by tho Public Health Act, 1876, to be held, exercised, and performed within the limits of tho said City of Christchurch, save and except the power of appointing a Medical Officer, a Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances, and snch other officers and servants as may be necessary for the due carrying out tho provisions of the Public Health Act, 1876.' "

The "report was received, and fche Board then went into Committeo to consider it.

In Committee all the words after the words "medical officer" were struck out, and the resolution aa amended was reported, and the report adopted by the Board unanimously. The Chairman was directed to forward a copy of the resolution to the Mayor of Chrisfc--cbtirch, under the seal of the Christchurch District Drainage Board.

Aftor the transaction of some minor bnsi* ness the Board adjourned.
