The Clematiß was bound to Weilingbon. with a carso of potatoes, and wes in charge of Captain Johnson, formerly some yeara,maßter of the Elizabeth Curie, and was making hia, first trip in the Clematis. Captain Johnson says that between 3 and 4 p.m. on Fiiday ha was joet laying .his course for .Wellington, close-hauled on the wind, whWi waa from the eastward, and seeing the steamsr Eotoraa nearing him, he called the attention of those on lipard his vessel to the f*et, and .wondered if tho steamer., was going to rua him down. Being on. a wind, ho fceVd on his course, judging that .the steamer would «lear .him. A collision, however, took, place; and Captain /John. son saysthfttwhen he spoke to th-n captain of tho Botorua after t.ha jiccident, tho lat er told him it was hto own f avit t and that he should have got out of the way. ' The whole fac*3.of the case.will be made pniho when the official enquiry is mode. It ifl foitunate that the Clematis wag not struck ft little farther forward, aa ,in all probability she would than have been «ut down, and loss of life might have reaulted. The Clematis ia the same . vessel which our. readers will reraomber .capsized at Bea some time: ago/and was found Soaking keel up and towed into) port.
