COURSING.

NEW ZEALAND WATERLOO CUP MEETING. TniED Day. A start was ir ade soon after nino o'clock on Thursday morning in a grand field close to the Bacecourse Hill homestead, the first brace of dogs being Pauline and Don Carlos, who commenced the THIHD HOUND. Pauline was much faster than the Azamafc puppy, and won well when the hare escaped into a turnip field. Petrea led Rhododendron up to the hare, and scored firsh turn ; the dog then got in and exchanges followed, the latter appearing to 'have most pace, but tho hare breaking through a fence enabled the bitch to exhibit her working powers in a road, the trial ending in her favour when puss was brought down. A move was now made on to somo plough, the hares being driven from a plantation. A long beat followed before one was driven out for Reflection and Jeanetto. The hare made tho best of her way down a wide furrow and Jeanette getting hest away from flips made play, giving Reflection the benefit of the doubt. Ihe former ran up a few points, and lot in the blue, who fell when driving at her game. She, however, soon resumed command, and was «coring well when the hare escaped before she could wipe out her opponent's score. Hiner&oa and Encore had a no-course on the plough, and a move wag then made to some etubble off turnips, where short (rials resulted. Honeymoon scored first turn, and gave place to Bansliec, who worked better than her rival fora fe*r points, when Honeymoon put herself out of a abort triul by killing. Miranda beat To Kcoti by the run-up in the shortest course of the meeting. Another short trial followed between , Hinemoa and Encore. In a long raco up tho former went past [and turned, wrenched, and drove tho haro through tho fence, where the spin ended. rOUBTJI EOCND. Petrea had much the best oi a short trial witil Pauline, and in a beautiful field Joannette Jed Hinemoa from a long slip. Turning, sho lefc in the latter, but a series of beautiful exchanges followed, the former haying all tho

best of the raoing stretches to fcho gate, where the hnre at last escaped. From another long slip Miranda drew out, and turned, then placed Banshee, but again jncorl past. Exchangeß followed in favour of Miranda till near the fence .where Banshee put in some pretty work, but Miranda ge'tiug an opportunity as the hare broke away, raced past and effected a beautiful kill. Waterloo Pubse, fibst bound. At the first attempt Beaconsfield and Happy-go-Lucky ran ano course Lockwoorl then led Guy in a long slip and turned, placed black but killed and won. Gyp and Little Queen ran a very short course, all in favour of the latter, who killed. Beaconsfield, in another short trial, beat the Balmoral puppy pointless. Riot scored first turn, and Calceolaria followed, placing Riot. Exchanges followed, but the bitch always worked the closest, and won with a trifle in hand. Lufra never gave Justinian a show, the latter turning it up. Magic ran a bye, in which she got well beaten. Ridley led Papanui, and turning the hare, tripped, enabling the former to kill without giving the bitch a point. Balmoral and Verbena ran an undecided, and then Chang met Black Cloud. The former scored first turn, and placed Black Cloud, who scored second. Chang then went to the front, and working well, scored an easy victory when he killed. Queen of the Seas easily beat Fairy, and then Balmoral and Verbena again went to clips. At starting the dog got blinked, Verbena secured first two turns, and then they exchanged, till last year's Cup winner assumed command, and from tbat out won a good course, when the judge lost sight at the fence. Foubth Day. Waterloo Punas. fibst bound (Continued). Belle led up, and Flirt shut up her opponent, getting a long grueller flingle-handed. Fly ran a bye. SECOND BOUND. Beaconsfield led Lockwood, and working well, killed. In a long course Little Queen had all the best of it with Calceolaria. Magic and Lufra ran very evenly, the latter having slightly the best of it, when the former put herself out by killing. Balmoral scored first two from Young Ridley, but going wide at every turn left the latter an easy winner. Chang and Queen of the Seas ran neck and neck till the turn, when the latter, working closer, left off a good winner. In a very short course Fly had all the best of Belle. Watebioo Plate, pibst bound. Kip was fastest, but Blue Belle, working best, won. Aster led Kathleen for first four and placed her, but raced past and won. Skiddaw Lass both led and out- worked Lancashire Lass in a long and pretty trial. Malice beat Billiards at all points. Chevy Chase ran away from Brigade in a good course, the latter never being in it. Camellia ran a bye. SECOND BOUND. Very little of the course was seen between Aster and Blue Belle except by the judge, but the latter obtained a favourable verdict. Sfeiddaw Lass and Malice were very even for pace, but the hare favoured the Lass, who won by a few points. Chevy Chase ran away from Camellia, who ran. cunning. THIBD BOUND. Blue Bell and Skiddaw Lass at starting split on two hares, but the former got first up, when they joined, and the latter did most of the work, and won. Chevy Chase ran a bye. FINAI, COUEBE. Skiddaw Lass led Chevy Chase, and gave him "plenty of openings, but as he could not take advantage, she won with plenty to spare. Watebioo Pubsh. THIBD BOUND. Beaconsfield was much too fast for Little Queen, who worked well but lost. In a course full of work, Young Ridley beat Lufra, and a start was made for home. Fifth Dat. Beautiful weather still favoured us, but hares came rather scarce to hand for the final trials. Queen of the Seas outpaced and out- worked Fly in a good spin. A capital slip through the horsemen followed for Beaconsfield and Young Bidley; the former ■was faster and led. turned and Fcored a series of exchanges, killing; the latter never being really dangerous. Queen of the Seas ran a bye. . ... . • • ' FINAL r COURSE. Beaconsfield was up first to a wire fence, but hanging in it enabled Queen of the Seas to assume the lead ;- the hare, however, came round and favoured the dog, wVo was fastest and working best effected the kill. Watebioo Cup. fifth bound. Petrea reached the hare first and scored, letting in Jeannette, but the latter running wide allowed her opponent to achievo an easy victory, -when they killed. Miranda ran a bye with Encore, and them came the FINAIi COURSE. In thi9 course Miranda led Petrea and outpaced her completely, winning easily a grand trial when the hare escaped. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Secretary called for three cheers for Messrs Mathias, Minohin, Atkinson, and the other gentlemen who had placed their properties at the disposal of the Club ; also for the judge, slippers, and winners. The calls were heartily responded to, and the best coursing meeting ever held in the Colony was brought to an end. Most of the money wont south, to Oamaru and its neighbourhood, Miranda being owned by Mr M' Aulay, of Totara, and Petrea coming from Mr T. Kelt's kennel. The former was trained by G. Ayton, of the Medora Hotel, Maheno, as also was Jeannette and other dogs who more or less exhibited a bold front during the running. T. Ivetl, of Temuka, trained Pauline, Skiddaw Lacs, and Queen of the Seas, and the position they took in the various events testifies to the cure he has taken with their training. W. Kirkwood trained Bcnonsfield, the winner of fie Purse, and Mr Cookson, his owner, has every reason to be proud of owning such a sterling good P"PPI-
