TIMARU STEEPLECHASES.

TBT TfiLEGBAFH.J TIMABC, Jdnb 17. The Timaru Steeplechase Meeting to-day was a great success. A large number of spectators was present. The course was partly on the South Canterbury Jockey Club grounds and partly overthe adjacent country. The following are particulars of the events : — Tally-Ho Hamhcap of lOOsovs; nomination, 2 soys ; acceptance, 2 soys, with sweep of 5 soys each for starters. Amount accruing from sweep to go to second horse. Distance about thro 3 milej. Mr P. Bntler'a The Agent, aged, 12at 111b' (Lunn) 1 Mr Q. H. Thompson's lvjnhoe, aged, lOst 71 b 'Joyce) 2 Lonehand, Clarence, Boyalty and Shillelagh also started. Betting — 6 to 4 bar one on the field. The flag fell to a fairatartj Boyalty getting the best of it, with Shillelagh well up, Clarence, Loneband and Ivanhoe lying behind in close company, with Agent last. Shillelagh fell at the first hurdle, All got over the first double except Ivanhoe, who declined. Comig to the second double, >tlio order was Clarence, Lonehand, Boyalty, Agent. At the opposite side of the course Ivanhoe showed in front, but soon afterwards Lonehand again took the lead. Passing the stand, Lonehand led Clarence by two lengths, with Ivanhoe third and Boyalty and Agent well up. All took the goree hedges at the first double in the order named. Shortly afterwards Lonehand cut out -the running, but at the second double Agent showed in front, with Clarence second, Lonehand having fallen third. The latter again went up to the leader, and the pair raced across to the first post and rail, which they took' together, Lonehand who up to this time 'had been going splendidly, tripped and landed on his head, sending Hedge a cropper— Clarence landed on Lonehand's back, unseating Lyford. From this the race was a moral to Agent, who won easily by four lengths from llvanhoe. There were 90 £1 shares in the ■ totalisator, 30 shares being on the winner. Maiden Steeplechase of 40 soys, nomination 2 sot?, weight for age j distance about 2 miles. Mr S. Osborne's Bobm Hood, aged, 12at 31bs (Owuer) 1 ■Mr M. Jonas* Colonel, agcl, 12st 31b3 (M'Kayl 2 jMr P. Butlor's Stella, ag«3,il2st 31b (M'Coy) 3 Deceiver also slanted. Stella lod over the ■jfirsfc double, followed by Bobin Hood, Deceiver and Colonel ; in the order named. •Colonel then went to the front and led over the first post and rail 'fence, with Deceiver <ilcse up, Boyalty and Stella not far behind. Deceiver baulked at the next hurdle, and passing the stand Bobin Hood cleared the fence fifty yards in advance of Colonel, Stella being a good third. Ihis order was maintained until reaching the back of the course, ' whan Colonel closed on fiobin Hood. The last fenae was taken by Bobin Hood and Colonel together, and a grand *aco ensued, Bobin Hodd. winning by three lengths, Stella coming in a fair third. Lonehand and Miss Hungerford tept ■together until tfco-far eide of the course was reached, when the ilutter drew away with tho lead over tho .second double, all going easily. Afc the iback of the courso Lonohand again took up the running. Tho post and rail fence was titben l>y the leaders and Agent cloao loguther, Afc ,fcho second fence from home, Lonehand baulked, throwing his rider, Agonfc coming away and winning easily. Betting— 2 to 1 against Miss Hungerford and Ivanhoe. The first jump was taken by Johnny, first, closely followed by Colonel. Miss Hungerford then came up, and she and the Colonel took the fence opposite the stand together, Ivanhoe being third. Colonel led over the first double, and opposite the stand Miss Hungerford assumed the lead, closely attended by Colonel, with Shillelagh third a long way behind, Ivanhoe fourth. At the last jump before coming into tho straight Colonel fell, throwing M'Coy heavily and allowing Miss Hungerford to score an easy victory. Shillelagh came in a bad second, neither of the others being in it. . This concluded a successful day's meeting.
