ASSOCIATION FOR FOSTERING LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
Tho usual monthly meeting of tho abovo Committee was held last evening, at tho offices of Messrs Draper, Charters and Co. s presont— Mr Allan (in tho chair), and Mossrs John Holmes, Smith, Scott, Moor, Hulbert, Toomer, Piper, Kirk, and Charters. A lotter was read troin tho Oity Council, asking for information required by the Royal Commission. It was resolved that a deputation, consisting of the President (Mr Allen), Messrs Holmes, Hulbort and Charters should wait upon the Commission, and lay before thorn for their consideration any matters relative to tho fostering nnd encouragement of native industries, especially t^e simplification of the patent laws. The Chairman stated that Mr Gray, of tho Canterbury College, had promised to give a lecture to the members of the Association, to which the publio would be invited, on tho subject of cement-making, to bo illustrated with practical experiments Arrangements had also boen nmdo with Mr Murphy, who had kindly promised to delirer a lecturo on tho subject; of beet-sugar, linsood and rape oil manufacturing, whioh he hoped would prove of practical use to the Society. Ib was suggested that at the annual meeting of the Association an exhibition should be held of local manufactures, but this matter was postponed for further consideration. The Secretary stated that Mr Archer, who has commenced tho manufacture of portmanteaus |in this cifcjj, was induoed to loavo Hobart Town for Ohristehuroh by reading an account in a Taemanian paper of tho establishment of an Association in this city for the encouragement of local industries. After tho transaction of some routine business tho Committee adjourned.
