Jeffcott, of Winohenden, Saddle Hill, a very old and much respected settler, met his death under very painful circumstances on Deo. 24. Shortly after breakfast he waa about to go out with the intention of looking after some cattle, and it seems that he went to the corner of the room in which he ■kept his gun, sticks, &c, and it is supposed that in taking up one of the guns it exploded, for soon afterwards he was discovered lying on the floor with his head shattered, and the gun on top of him. Dr Hooken, tho District Coroner, held an inquiry yesterday, and the jury found a verdict — "That tho evidonce •wob insufficient to enahlo thorn to say whether death was tho result of accident or design."
