U.C.C. v. M.C.C.

This match was brought to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon, and terminated in an easy victory for the U.0.C., who won by nine wickets. The strongest eleven won, and the M.0.0. were further weakened by the absence of J. Fowler in their second innings. It was as usual throe o'clock before play commenced, when Ashby and Frith, the not outs' of the previous Saturday, went to the /wickets. ABhby drove Turner's first for four, and a Bingle resulted from the next ball; bringing Frith opposite to the young bowler, who Bent him down a good one, which he failed to play. Ashby was soon busy again, driving Fuller for four, following it up with a couple off the same bowler. Buns were freely got during the partnership of Longden and Ashby, both batsmen punishing the bowling, but a separation was at last effected, as ABhby skied one to the long field, which was hold by Watson. . The retiring batsman had made his runs in his usual free and pretty style, having scored 40 out of a total of 134. Hanmer, who went in, did not stop long, caught and bowled appearing against his name, and with the advent of A. 0. Wilson the end quickly came; as Longden was caught at the wickets when the acoro stood at 136. Longden had made a dozen in creditable style, but the wicket appeared to be a bumpy one. Watson and Alpe were the first to start the second innings of the Midland, Ashby starting the bowling. From the fourth of his first over Alpe was caught at short stop. Watson started scoring by smacking Frith's second to square leg, this big hit resulting in a clean run six. He succumbed, however, a few overs later to a shooter from Ashby, and was replaced by Allen. The new comer succoeded in getting Ashby away to leg for four, and his partner, who had scored six, then put an easy catch into Ollivier's hands ; 19 — 3—6. Morice came in, and after scoring four by a couple of twos, jumped out to one of Frith's and was clean bowled; 27—4 — 4. Turner followed, and drove Frith to the off for four, aftorwards adding a single and bringing Allen opposite to Frith, who upset his wicket ; 32—5 — 6. Turner was sent away by Ashby with the score unaltered. Beaumont and M'Donnell were now partners, and after the former had scored a fluky three, M'Donnell was stupidly run out ; 39—7 — 2. Fuller, tho next man, slogged at one well up from Frith, and suffered for it by the loss of his wicket. Beaumont fluked another single off Ashby, leaving only three runs to be obtained to save the innings, and these wore added off Frith's next over. A few more were obtained before Fawcetfc was run out, and: Pavitt — the lost man-j stayed until the score had mounted to 52, when he put one up to point and the innings closed.. With only eleven runs for the TLC.U. to get to win, a lot of time was cut to waste before the Midland men took the field, A. 0. Wilson and Hartland being deputed to bat. The former, however, lost his wicket before the requisite number was obtained, but Frith and Hartland rubbed off the score, and were not out with two and three respectively.
