'xae remaining clauses 01 tne report wen approved as read. In reply to Mr Brown tho Engineer said that a 12-inch pipe would be used for the Papanui road. Mr Brown said that if the Board wero now making labour for the unemployed he thought they ought to go on with the drainage of the Papanui road. On the portion of that road known as Barker's Estate thoro was no drainage at all, and on the Engineer's authority they had plenty of 12-inch pipes on hand. Mr Harman said it seemed Binguhr that -with so many people unemployed, labour should still remain at its present high rate. Mr Duncan pointed out that the work of drainago was very necessary in the Borough of Sydenham, where population was rapidly increasing ; and being low, ti.o water rushed there from other parts of the lastrict. Mr Brown had no objection to Sydenham having its full share of attention, but this was no reason why any other portion of the district should be neglected. He had heard, much to his surprise, that Mr Duncan had ■aid that the work at Papanui road should not be carried out for two years. Mr Duncan said he had no recollection of haying ever used such an expression. His only desire was that the whole work should bo proceeded with systematically. He thought the work referred to Bhould first be reported on by the Engineer. Mr Brown said he would have no objection to the Works Committee reporting on this matter, and would move—" That the Works Committee be requested to report upon the advisability of continuing the sewer up the Papanui road as far as Merivale lane." The motion wai seconded and agreed to. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Nicholls, on behalf of a number of residents in the Ferry road, interviewed the Board, asking that somo action might be taken to fill up section 48, leading into Jackson's creek, on which there was at present a large quantity of stagnant water. If some measures were not taken before summer the result they feared would bo serious. As it was shown that a atrip of land about 14ft in width would be required to remedy the state of things represented, it was decided to write to the owner, asking if he would convey the extent required for a drain to the Board at their expense. Mr Harper waited on the Board to represent that the amount of £60, awarded to him by the Board for works running through his land, wa3 not sufficient for the damage to his property through the absence of drainage of any kind during the winter. After consideration, tho Board decided to w-open a ditch which had been filled up when the Board's work was being carried out, provided the contractors had not been instructed, on behalf of Mr Harper, to fill up the ditch in question. # Mr Wright saw the Board with reference to their offer of £10 for compensation to damage and occupation of his land on Ferry road- Mr Wright represented that the Board had been in occupation for a long time, mod had made the paddock of five acres useless to him for that period. He had also to pay £5 ' taxes recently on this land, and didnot think the £10 offered to him sufficient. He fead also been compelled to Bell bis cattle and had lost a tenant through the Board's occupation. He estimated the loss he l»d sustained at £50. After Mr Wright had retired, the Board on consideration decided to raise their offer to! £15. COBEE3FOITDBNCH. The Town Clerk wrote asking when it would be convenient for the Board to receive the members of the Sanitary Committee to diacass the question of filling up drains in the city abandoned by the Board. In conjunction with this letter a petition was read from some residents in Lower High street, asking the Board to cause the deep ditch running along that road to be filled op when the street was being lowered. , The Engineer said he would not like to be responsible for the place not being flooded if heavy rains set in. Messrs Duncan and Harman thought they might take the risk of heavy rains occurring, sad fill in tne ditch from Manning'fl Brewery

Grnnted, if the Borough Council will proride for. the carrying away of storm water. Tho Avon Road Board wrote calling at«ntion to the damage caused by an -open litchi.on the Canal Reserve road. If 'tho Drainage Board required this ditch for fliuinige purposes, the Koad Board requested that it might ba piped and covered in or fenoed in jrdeit to avoid accident.
