The brigantine Flirt hod a most eventful passage from Timaru to Auckland, as will bo seen from the .following extract from tho Auckland Herald of Oot. 10:— "Tho brigantine Flirt arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon from Timaru, with a cargo of breadatnffs and grain. Tho brigantine had a most eveHtful voyage from port to port, tho details of which can be gleaned from the following roport furnished by the master:— Weighed, and sailed from Timtra Bonds on Friday, at 2.25 p.m., the wind blowing hard from tke westward at the time. There being evory indication of a heavy southerly sale, I put to sea before tho bills of ludin? for the latter part of cargo came -on board. At 5.15 pm. the wind suddenly changed to the south-east ; .took in all unnecessary sail. The wind blew viciously for ono hour, when it moderated, and hauled into the south. Put on sail again, and passed Akaroa at ll.S"> p.m., nine hours from Timaru j after which time the wind gradually in--creased. At midnight, took in the mainsail, 40. On Saturday, tho galo inorcasoil; sighted Capo Pmlliser, tbe wind blowing norlh-wo3t half north, the vessel being 28 hours from Timaru. The sea was very turbulent while crossing the Straits, tho gale here becoming furions, assisted withhnrricano bail squalls; Was obliged to carry as much sail as possible to help the ship to run. At 10.30 p.m. a «ea broke clean over tho vessel, completely burying her undar water to tho light shades, and olearing tbe decks of almost everything. Fortunately tho vessel was kept before the sea, which caused her to lay quite still without tolling. In this position she soon rose up nnd cleared herself of the water, but leaving the docks oleared of everything that could escape. The galley broke its slingfi, and were it not for its having otught in tho fore-rigging and fore-topmast backstays, it would, ha-ve bcou lout. All the water casks burst the slings and lashings, and all the water was lost, ■except half a cask, wbioh was saved by timely exertion. We lost two life-buoys, with ahip's name on them, with long lino, and all the boats, bars, rope, Ac. Previous to tho acoidont the starboard pump gear and boxes were taken ont for repair ; they were also lost, and were it not that the gear of the port pump fitted the starboard, the cargo would have boen endangered. On Sunday, at G3O p.m., Bighted the Portland Island light, but it being so hazy, and the storm still raging with its utmost fury, the light was not visible until we were within five miles of i*. From Timam to Portland Island light took 52 hours, the Btonn Btill ragine, and the ship running under close-reef fore-topsail. At midn{ght passed Cape G able- on d foreland, and rounded the East Cape at 9 a.m. on Monday morning, 66} honrs from Timaru. Since thon light hrcezes into part.
