THE BOAT RACING ON SATURDAY.
So soon as the boats could be staged tho racing programme was proceeded with, tho first heats being witnessed by the greator part of the spectators. The final heat, however, whioh was not got off until about six o'clock, was seen only by a score or two of people, the majority of whom were boating men. In order that the contests might be .yerilable scratch races, the names both of the Canterbury and Union men were mixed together, but in the drawing for the four-oared races, it happened, singularly enough, that the crews were strictly representative ones, and the contest thus resolved iteelf into a struggle between tho two Clubs. To the general publio this was of no moment, but amongst the boatin» men it roused the keenest possible interest. In the pair-oar races there were mixed orews. The events were as follows#— TOUBOABB— PIB3T HEAT. Tyne— S. C. Kesteven (stroke) , J. T. Smith, B. R. Mansfield and G. Bell. W. Woledge (cox) 1 Electric— J. lay lor (stroke), L. M. Ollivier, E. Hawke?, and A. H. N. Campbell. 0. Si \ on, sen. (cox) 2 Mr A. R. Pdvitt sent the boats away, the course being about half a mile, from Cow* liahaw's to the Willows. The Electrio, always • good s'arting beat, got the beat of it, but Ofiivier's sliding seat unfortunately broke away, leaving him vory awkwardly placed. This of course gave the Tyne an advantage, which was not to be lost, and though Taylor did his best to get again on even terms, the Tyne secured a win for the Union Club by a good quarter length. SECOND IIEAT. Eleclric— R. D. Petrie (etrok«-),J. Duncan, .B. Borland and F. D. Keateven. W. Dunnage, cox ... 1 Tyne— J. 0. Jones (stroke), J. P. Collins, E. M. Boulton and Ji. W. Hanmor. 0. Dixon, Bon. (cox) 2 Again the Electric jumped away at the start, causing tho moving of tho Tyne to appear sluggish by comparison ; but this time the lead w a held, the Tynts's si roke being anything but in form. The win was an easy one, and .a dniblo victory waa thereby scored for the Union men.' PIJfAI. HEAT. Tyne— S C. Kcsteven (stroke), J. T. Smiib, R.R. Mansfield uud G. Bell. W. Woledge, cox + Electric— B. D. Petrio (stroke), J. Duncan, R. Borland and P. D. Kesteveri. W. Dunnage (cox) ... ... .;. t The dead heat which waa rowed formed ore of the most excitibg and beat contested races ever seen on the Avon'. All the •way from tho StaniLore bridge to the finish, the boats were on fairly even terms, tho advantage changing sufficiently often to render the excitement continuous. Both orews, it will be noticfld, were composed of Union men, aud they elected to be content with so plucky a struggle. rAIR-OABS— FIBST HKAT. Daphne. — S. H. Scagor, and A. L. Smith. J. Rogers (cox) 1 Dolphin.— F. Allisou, and J. Ford. F. Dunnage (cox) ••• 2 This beat was pretty easily won by the Daphne, with, about four lengths to the good. SECOND HEAT. Dolphin.- R. G. Walters, au<l R. Spenoer. W. Pannage (cox) 1 Cygnet.— W. 0. Aiken, and T Searell. J. Roc is (cox) ... 2 This was a hollow affair. Searell did a • little fishing, and in the meantime Walters had taken the Dolphin well ahead. PIKAI HEAT. Dolphin— B,. G. Walters, and R. Spencer. W. Dunnage (cdx) 1 Daphne. — S. H. Seager, and A. L. Smith. J. Rogers (cox) 2 The Dolphin kept a pretty even lead, and won by a length, both crows pulling extremely well to tho finish.
