■ » K} THB BDITOB OF THB STAB. Bib, — Ifc has been asserted everywhere that the letters in your late issues signed " One of the working claw," *ere written by me, and my denial is received with an incredulous smile, I beg apace to justify myself. The writer of those letters was quite ignorant of the law. In 1854 Homestead Pre-emptive Bights were established by clause 60 of the Governor's proclamation. . The Act was illegal, and so' also were all the Homestead Bights taken under it— an attempt was made to validate by retrospection in 1858, but that statute is no good in equity. The statesman alluded to, as " Young ' Alltalk " bad nothing ' to do' with that law,, and to this day has never meddled with it. There is no such ordinance as " The fencing , Pre-dmptive Eights Ordinance." The fencing pre-emptive stands under the illegal statute quoted above, and, strange to say pre-emptives do not take 15 chains of frontage, but mostly over 30, or double as much as your working man says. That part of the law. was effected by Mr Alltalk. ' Twould'cu't my right hand off before it should wilfully belie any man, mistakes may be made, but such a tissue of untruths is quite beyond a mistake, it is a very gross and careless error. Mr Alltalk has enough to answer for in law and in equity, but let the devil have his due, and let us never forget that a false accusation is a slander, which always recoils upon the author.' The logical analysis of the letters proves them not mine, because I never wrote a large, involved sentence in my life— l hate them. My words are always like the Roman sword, short, sharp, two-edged and pointed.— l am, &c; } J. W. TREADWELL. 'Christchurch, August 25.
