WRECK OF THE SOHOONER GARIBALDI.
The following la the result of the inquiry into the wrook ot the schooner Garibaldi at Hokitika, aa reported in tho Weet Coast Tima ot August 13:— *' That, when rounding the end of tho north spit of the Hokitika river, the master of the Garibaldi bagged it too closely and his vessel grounded there. From that point she became unmanageable, and waa cast up by tha sea on to the beach. It appeared that within a few days of the acoident the Bhoal had been marked by a beacon rod and white flog, but since the north ohannel of the river has become unmanageable it had been discontinued. I ooLtherefore of opinion that the accident is to a certain extent attributable to this fact, for had the shoal been marked by a white fl ig the acoident taight have been avoided. As it is, tho master of the Garibaldi is not to blame at all for uot keeping Wa vessel in the. proper ohannel j the fact of the shoal not being marked by a white flag id sufficient excage, as he might natnrally have oonoluded that by not seeing the beacon there was sufficient water for tbe Garibaldi, Under these oireuuwtancea I do not consider it necessary to proceed any further in the matter." • Mr H. S. Agnew, nautical assessor, conourred in this report. The Garibaldi waß owned by Meaars Cameron Bros., of Lyttelton, and insured for £650. She was sold, with her cargo of timber (insurod for £150), for £16.
