MR GEORGE GOULD AS ADVISERGENERAL.

TO THB BDITOE OF TUB STAB. Sib,— Will you kindly find room in your next issue for the following replies to queries suggested by your correspondents, " Under crust " and " Working Man." First, my reason for not taking part in the public affairs of the Colony is, simply, that I am so deaf that for years paßb I bare been unable to take any part in public meetings. This is my misfortune, but not a fault. As to my being a squatter, a reference to tho Land Office will show that the onlypastoral property I kave any intorestin in NewZealand consists of about 1100 acres on theAshburton, and of which I Lold a half share; and further, that last season myeolf and part* nor raised botween thirty and forty thousand bushels of grain, and hope to raiee more thia eoason.

Land in the North Island, I do not hold, or own a Bingle acre, nor do I know how many settlors are in the district named, but I do happen to know some who felt it was useless to grow grain without a means of getting it to market.

As to the Land Tax, my only objection to it is that it does not go far enough. I am, and always have been, an advocate for Or Property Tax, and think every man should be taxed in proportion to his means. Lastly, my conscience acquits me of over having acted otherwise than the working man's friend, and with that object in view I wrote the letter to the Press.— Youra, &0.,

GEOEGE GOULD.
