Matthew Hawkins, a well known 1 resident, was received into gaol to-day, under remand till to-morrow, charged with embezzling* moneys, the property of the Union Building Soeiety, and Eaitangata Coal Company, of both of which he- was Secretary. BWkiiw gave himself up to the police. His defalca** tions are variously stated at from £1500' fco* £4000. Warrants were to-day issued for thearrest of another well known citizen- for forgery. He is said to-havo bolted to South* America.
